Everyone knew the reason for Smith leaving was because he was stifling Cam's development as the leader of this team. Gettleman saw an opportunity for the team chemistry to improve and took it. Worked out pretty well from what I remember.

I wasn't saying Smith didn't need to go simply saying that much of the dead cap space was due to his own moves and not what he inherited.

Lots of speculation in the OP, very few facts. OP is presenting the idea that the next GM will simply be a yes man handing out fat contracts as a fact when it's simply his opinion. I see he goes overboard on his negative opinions too.

Timing isn't as bad as you might think. Dimitroff, the Falcons' GM says that the GM job runs from Jan to July, they fade into the background as the season approaches. 

Future looks grim? No the future looks cloudy right now, those clouds may turn into a torrential downpour or they may simply blow over. No one knows right now. I'll grant you they need to hire the right guy, but until they hire a GM, you have no idea if you've got a hurricane coming in or blue skies coming in. 

And, you know what the Panthers have that 15-20 other teams don't have that makes this an attractive job for a GM? A true franchise QB. While I've argued that Cam isn't the most accurate QB in the NFL [he isn't] and that he deserves more of the blame for 2016 than some think, I've also said he's a top ten QB. He's also fairly young and under contract until 2020.

That fact along makes this job attractive. There's other talent on the team as well.

Panthers aren't doomed because Gettleman is no longer the GM.

Simply put, no one knows where this franchise is going until we pick the next GM and get to know what he's like. Then we'll know the direction we're headed in.
