Analysis: The Way The Panthers Fired Dave Gettleman Was A Huge Mistake - Why Our Future Looks Grim, And Why Competent GMs May Not Even Come Near Us

This is one of the most desirable places to work in the league.

You're joking, right? You understand after what JR did, and what guys we have to sign in the future, that very few GMs look at this job as a positive?

But that's always an issue. Like I said, do we choose the right candidate. The Patriots are never afraid to move on from guys and have turnover. We're not the Browns and the men who take these types of jobs have huge egos and think they can succeed where others (Gettleman) failed. I'm not happy about the move as I thought Gettleman was doing a good job, overall, with some obvious missteps. I'm just optimistic that we can find someone who can build on what he started.

Gettleman is a good talent evaluator but poor with personnel and people. The Josh Norman gaffe was unforgivable. Add the failure to upgrade the offensive line for 5 years running and you could argue he did as much to hold us back as anything. Most of the poor starts were due to his wholesale changes each year and overrelying on rookies to start in place of veterans.  He made some great moves but let's remember our receivers were deemed the worst in the league in 2015. In 2016 our secondary was considered the worse. These were all due to his dumping of vets and bringing in JAGs and rookies.

I'll disagree with you there. As good as Olsen is, he still has two years left on his contract, and he can't really do much this season. Sitting out will just put a bad look on you, and I don't believe is very beneficial for anyone.

Not to mention it's very unlikely Olsen would've even done that.

And the way this offense is going, we don't really need another "TE" right now. Our offense will revolve around having dominant slot receivers doing their job, and the mismatch potential we can create without 2 TE sets.

Even if Olsen is out, this offense could still survive. Last year, that never would've been the case, but Gettleman brought in players via the draft and free agency that finally allow us to have some breathing room even if Olsen goes down.

Our offense no longer revolves around Olsen thanks to Gettleman. And Richardson cuts him.

If Gettleman went for an extension right now, it would set a precedent around the league that other players could push GMs even when their deadline on their contract is a few years away. It's not a good look no matter how you make it out to be.

If Gettleman went for an extension right now, there's no feasible financial way we'd be able to keep Norwell and Turner next season. There wouldn't be enough cap left to do so.

I do put a lot of blame on DG for last year. Yes he let Norman walk. Which is a debatable topic. But he nearly wasted the entire draft trying to replace him.

Bradberry will be an excellent corner but Worley and Sanchez could have been WRs or OL with upside.

Man, this whole firing just proves that those who claim to be level headed fans, are not that all. They are one move from going crazy like the rest of us. There are a few who are level headed no matter what, but that's few. Most fans are one move always from losing it lol

Of course I know the task and you are nuts if you think most GMs who get hired end up with the kind of talent we have. Most times they inherit perennial losers and have to build from scratch. They don't  have an MVP quarterback and the number of probowler we do, a coach who won coach of the year 2 of the past 4 years and the positive reputation the Panthers have among players. Gettleman was the one problem with his going cheap and pissing off agents and players. He is gone.

You make pretty posts with nice graphics but your actual knowledge of what is going on is suspect in this case.

You do understand Gettleman had no money at all, right?

Like he had to make do with scraps year after year, and below top 20 picks year after year in the draft and make something out of it.

He got Trai Turner, Andrew Norwell, and good depth this year at OG, something we haven't had much of in the past.

He got Michael Oher who played really well in 2015 prior to him being injured, and he drafted Daryl Williams and Taylor Moton as of late. He even got Remmers who was an upgrade over Chandler.

He's tried to upgrade our O-line everyway he could with the little resources he could use.

He couldn't go out there and overpay for whoever's in FO because he didn't have the money. Yet, he made do with what little he had.

You understand these pro bowlers and players have big time contract dates coming up, and we don't have as much cap space as we did last off-season to pay all of them.

If JR wants this to be a pushover FO overpaying some players, it's likely a lot of talent we have will be slipping away fast.
