DH-Anyone who judges how good a QB is by the team's W-L record is not being fair.

I agree with you FB.

However I don't know if I have ever heard of a first round QB that had a losing record in college. That seems awfully strange.

(not calling out Cutler on that, just a really weird thing to happen)

OMG, how fuggen ironic is this when pertaining to Jay Cutler?? Jeezus, I can't recall how many posters mentioned, "Well, Jay has had a losing record with Denver" as an example of "why he's not a good QB."

Delicious.

Thank you, FB :D

Why am I getting this reputation for being some smarmy in your face know it all from you and Panthro? I have no problem admitting when I am proven wrong. I've never ever said or purported to be an expert on anything.

If you can find a post where I criticize a QB by saying something like "he sucks because he has such and such as a W-L record", I will gladly apologize. Certainly I don't think that way. It's one of the things that drives me BATS*IT CRAZY...when people say a QB "HAS" a W-L record.

FB, you must admit though that there are some QB's who get better as the game goes on, and who you certainly want to see behind C in the 2 minute.

But to blame W=L on a QB is pretty crazy. But, it is obvious that with a Pro Bowl calibre QB, the W's do seem to come much more often.

Again, anyone ever remember a 1st rounder with a losing record in college?

Yes there are some like that who do it more often than not.

I don't know of any, but I don't follow college that much, so take my opinion as a fairly uneducated guess. I would say that from what I know of college football (which is mainly around draft time when I start paying attention), most 1st round QBs (Flacco is an exception I can think of right off the bat and there are a few more I am sure) tend to come from powerhouse/heavily televised type programs like USC or have some type of pedigree/bloodlines and play well in a big time conference (like Eli, Ole Miss isn't really a powerhouse IIRC). The Mannings and Cutler are both from a big time conference in the SEC. Vanderbilt isn't a very successful squad with or without Cutler. IMO, their losing ways speak more to and feed off of their inability to recruit big time prospects (I mean look at the rest of the SEC, they are football porn for NFL scouts and Vanderbilt is kind of the ugly sister who tags along) than it does to Cutler. If I were to watch them play and thought he was a big part of why they lost, I might change my mind on that but I doubt he would have been drafted in the first round if scouts thought that way.

I didn't take anything you said as indicting Cutler for it.

Some other people probably won't feel the same though. ;)

I just think that if a team is the weakest team in a very good conference it's hard to believe that one player on that team would make that much difference (bowls vs not bowls). Again, JMO. Those like you who watch a bunch of college ball all are more qualified to make that judgment than I am.

Not pointing my finger at Cutler making that statement.

But in college ball, a good QB will win you 8 games a year. All you honestly need in college is a decent QB and you go to bowls.

Just seems a little crazy to me.

:nono: Washington's Jake Locker is very athletic and more than just "decent" , yet how many bowl games have they been to lately?
