Does Your Opinion of Thomas Davis Change?

I will NEVER blame a player for going after more money, though TD has been given chances no other player would be given, after three ACLs, etc, so it's a little bit different.   However, letting a GM go that has been mostly decent, and at this terrible spot to let one go, because of an aging vet that is in the twilight of his career is something I will always blame JR for.   It's just bad timing and a firing that reeks of childishness.

I sadly just don't expect this team to be high quality until JR is out of the picture, not being mean, just saying.

Don't forget that TD owes as much to this franchise, if not more, that the franchise does to him...

Most teams would have cut him after the 2nd knee injury. Panthers stuck with him all the way and he continued his career and paychecks. I respect TD and his character and drive, but the Panthers didn't turn their backs him.

Based on everything I've heard, this was not due to one instance.  I think it is the culmination of the way a lot of situations played out (Jordan Gross, Smitty, Norman) and finally Olsen and especially TD.  The TD situation may have been the breaking point, but it wasn't the root cause.

I don't know how to completely feel at this point.  I certainly have no animosity towards TD or Olsen. That being said, Gettleman got brought in to do a job, and he stuck to his principles to the end.  I respect a man for that.  Gettleman made a lot of decisions that took balls.  There are a lot of "leaders" in today's society who sulk away when they actually have to make a hard decision.

Whether or not a change was the right call, I don't think we will know that for a while.  The pressure on Rivera has been greatly amplified by this, and fair or unfair, also for Cam.  It's hard to believe Richardson's advancing age isn't playing into this some.  Regardless of the current players/team, Richardson's window (turning 81 tomorrow and 8 years into his leased heart) is closing.  He wants to win, and to win with the players he's got now.

This is undoubtedly a make-or-break year for Rivera and the whole staff.  The new GM will have no loyalty to Rivera and in general want to hand select their coach.  I also give Gettleman credit for giving both Rivera and Beane a chance when he came in.  Some GM's wouldn't have extended that courtesy.  Cam will also have to win the new GM over like he did with Gettleman.

This will be an interesting season.  We need a good start as much this year as any, or things could get nasty in a hurry.

Lastly, I want to thank Gettleman for his work.  He wasn't perfect, but he did a respectable job given how bad the salary cap situation honestly was.  I hope the right decision was made.

No one has any facts. The entire front page of this forum is filled with people speculating. Sports talk is 100% speculation during the months of June and July. This thread is no different. We're here to discuss scenarios.

There are many facts here, speculation about those facts and even more opinions about the facts and speculations. But when you start a thread based off of know fictitious scenarios, you're going to get a bunch of BS.

We don't need facts to speculate on why DG was fired but we can discuss why we think he was fired. Not what do you think about TD if this is true, or what if that and this is true, come on...

If Olsen/TD are responsible for this it shows they are team players and seriously worsens my opinion of them.

However the blame lies with JR. He should have told them to fug off.

The players always have a right to try to get paid what they think they are worth.  This is a professional business, as hard as that is for fans to separate sometimes given our emotional investment.  I have left a job over money before, and I didn't feel bad.  The reverse can be true also in an "at-will" employment environment, which the NFL definitely is.

That is why owners in theory hire GM's, because they have to have the foresight and the emotional detachment to make the best moves for the franchise long-term.  I don't know everything, but it does seem like JR is letting emotional attachment rule this decision

    • I get the love affair with T-Mac but there is no way we don't address the D-line until the 6th round. We can expect Brown to shoulder the D-line by himself.   The only way I see us taking a WR at pick 8 is if Carter and Graham are gone. I would be less surprised if we traded down and got a couple more picks. If you do your homework, like Morgan did with Coker, you can find a WR much easier than a D-linemen throughout the draft.
