Here's one way that it happens this way... when the owner steps in and overrules the GM running the team.  That's when a GM suddenly realizes he's no longer the GM.

And that's when the GM takes the whistle off from around his neck and hands it to the owner with his resignation.

I just hope that Gettleman decides to retire now instead of going to another team.  Would sure hate to see him be hired by one of the other NFC South teams.
