Play Calling in the PreSeason

A topic I've been pondering. . . discuss as you see fit.

With the evolution of the offense in mind, what do we expect to see in the preseason?  The two extremes of thinking are . . .

1)  Open up the play book and allow our rookies, incoming free agents, and QB to build chemistry and learn the offense at (almost) full speed.

2)  Run the vanilla crap that most teams have just to see how the players fighting for the bottom of the roster look.  Keep the real stuff under wraps until week 1.

Obviously reality will fall somewhere in between these two extremes, but which way will the 2017 Panthers lean?  With Ron in charge I am always thinking he will go conservative, but given that we have added two weapons (the likes of which we haven't seen in a while) it might be prudent to open things up a little.  What do you think huddle?  Will we get a real preview of the offensive firepower, or will we play it cool and hope the implementation goes smoothly in the first few weeks of regular season?

We won't show any of our major cards, but I could see motions between CMC and Samuel from the slot to the backfield to try some of that out. Likely will be basic playcalls since you shouldn't reveal your playbook in a preseason practice game, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us try some stuff.

In 2011 we averaged 279.8 yards per game in preseason.  Cam was 24/57 for 300 yards with 1 TDs and 0 INTs.  He rushed 5 times for 68 yards and 1 TD.

In the regular season opener, Cam was 24/37 for 422 yards, 2TDs, and 1 INT.  He rushed 8 times for 18 yards and another TD.

History says we run the vanilla crap.

I think all your GIF threads of our rookies got me too excited. I just don't want to wait until week 1 to see them fully unleashed. Thanks for providing all that content in this boring time of year.

I'm sure they will take it easy on Cam at first. I wouldn't expect much down field stuff coming off shoulder surgery and rehab. If Cam gets hit early I expect him to be promptly pulled. In all honesty I wouldn't even expect him to play the first preseason game. Could be wrong but I know Rivera.

I hear what you're saying, but it's very likely that 5 of our 7 receivers (including CMC) have never caught a pass from Cam. I sure don't want him out there taking hits, but he has to be allowed to build rapport with someone other that Olsen and KB.

FWIW, I would be fine with Olsen spending most of his preseason on the sideline.

I agree with everything you said but I'm thinking about conservative ron here. Id like to see Cam play more and longer than usual just for reps but don't see that happening

It will be very telling when the newbs get their first real in-game bullet pass from Cam. That is how we separate the men from the practice squad.

Man, I really hope Cam will be taking some heat off his short throws.  I have confidence he'll be able to.  Crucial to upping his completion percentage and "evolving" our offense.
