Article: Reinventing The Panthers Offense - Why Shula Needs To Get Smarter With The New Guys

Also, the Falcons were a perfect example of health and luck like us in 2015. Their OL played almost 100% of the year and no offensive weapons missed time or were coming off injuries. They also hit the NFC playoffs when every other team looked bad. They played Seattle who was 3-3 to end the season with the 3 wins over us, Tampa and SF. Then they got to play a home game against a 10-6 GB team full of defensive warts.

So it's luck when you want it to be and it's offensive genius when it's not luck? Let me tell you a secret, both the Panthers and the Falcons made it to the superbowl because they were good not because they were lucky. Falcons spent big bucks and it paid off and Shula created one of his better schemes in 2015. If not for some poor penalties in the Super Bowl with a young team we would have won. Just like the Falcons they blew the Pats out of the water the first half but its because they were young and lacked experience.

Funchess wasn't even beginning to turn by the time Cam had 4-5 defenders on his face.

There's no way he could've thrown it out on time.

Well if they actually practiced that play Cam should've known when to throw it.  It's called timing and other QB's can do it, so why not Cam?

Edit:  What I believe is that Cam didn't trust Funchess to be where he was supposed to be and that was why he didn't throw the ball.  He doesn't fully trust some of his receivers.  Which is understandable since Funchess can be a little iffy on route running here and there.  But there was a play to be made there had Cam taken a chance and trusted Funchess a little more.

@stankowalski I don't know what you're seeing. Cam had two defenders from the left side all over him with three others behind them before Funchess even turned on his route. Cam had no window of opportunity at all.

There was no way Cam could've gotten it out right at Funchess in his situation. That play was non-existant as soon as Shula called on every o-line piece to block each of their defenders one-on-one for a slow developing play.

EDIT: Alright I see it now. Cam was progressing through his reads left to right so by the time Funchess turned Cam was already looking at the other side of the field for play. He didn't have time to Funchess due to the fact that so many defenders began flocking him right when he progressed through his reads.

Simply happens. I can see that small window of opportunity existed. However, Cam didn't do anything wrong.

@Saca312 I don't know man.  I've seen plenty of other QB's make those kinds of throws.  It's all about timing and if the QB and receiver are on the same page it should work in that situation.  He should've thrown to the spot where Funchess was supposed to be and hoped that Funchess would have made his break on time.  The defender was far enough off that it would have been a completion if executed properly.

Cam makes that throw all the time. In fact, he's one of the best at throwing and moving in condensed pockets. On this instance, it was a poorly drawn up play and Cam was just going through his reads. He was scanning the other side of the field by the time Funchess was open, and it was too late to go back.

You don't go for a long developing play with a slow WR and a TE on 3rd and 3 and expect your o-line to block everyone 1 on 1. That's a stupid call.

Anyways, here's Cam handling pressure and making insane throws:

Cam can do them. In this instance, he was just progressing through reads and didn't see Funchess turn yet. By the time he could've looked back, he had 4 defenders on him.

Simple as that. A bad play call no matter how you try and put it.

It's called anticipation. The great ones have a knack for it.

Its ridiculous how some Panther fans seem to have now convinced themselves that Cam Newton is unable to throw a deep-out or deep-comeback when that's two of the routes he's been best at for 6 full years now.  His arm strength has made that one of his most consistent throws.

Some fans can't be happy no matter what happens.

I'll be happy if McCaffey and Samuel consistently catch his short passes . I get upset every time cam overthrows someone . Now if he keeps throwing rockets but the rookies have no problems catching them somehow I won't complain

I can't help believe the fact that Cam has had so little time to practice with the new offense players we have, it's going to factor into how we look as an offense for the first quarter of the season . I wonder if they'll give cam more pre season time to get in some more reps, or cautiously rest him until game one.

Shulong and Cam are going to have to set expectations...with the multitude of weapons we have now....im mean seriously.... the line will be the only question. Our passing attack should be unstoppable....We have to have a new wrinkle every Sunday or we're predictable.
