And another one. Thomas Davis wants a contract extension before Training Camp.

PAY THAT MAN

Oh, Marty. Still wish you had the reigns, do ya?

Seriously though, I wonder how much of this type of stuff (players under contract, wanting new contracts) is these scumbag agents getting in their ear and constantly telling them, "I need, er..I mean, you deserve more money!!"

Haha I was waiting for you to say that

I'm all about these players getting as much as they can. Push the envelope and get as much as you can from these owners. Said the same in the Olsen thread.

Now, with that being said; I wouldn't be discussing an extension with TD. I feel Shaq is ready

The Shula/Rivera effect has been discussed ad nauseum. We know their faults that have cost this team in various ways through games over the years.

But I think fans have also, intentionally or not, taken for granted what having a talent like Cam behind center has done for our OL these last several years. He has made some seriously mediocre guys that in no way should have been starting look serviceable at times by making absurd plays. Hell, who expected us to win 15 games let alone go to SB50 when KB went down, and Ginn JR became our top wideout? We caught lightning in a bottle in 2015, and our FO seemingly expected it to happen again because we have Cam Newton to compensate for deficiencies. Obviously it didn't work out that way as Newton was absolutely battered in game 1 of 2016 which ended up just looking like a bad rerun of SB50. Who could have predicted that, right?

idk, our line has been sh!t for more than the Cam Newton Experience. The focus definitely needs to be on the Oline for a QB like Cam. But if the players to be drafted or picked up in FA don't fit the (your) mold? what is to be done? just skip past that season and start over?

Like I said, we had enough talent to win that super bowl. I'm not putting that on Gettleman

He's 34, had three major injuries and still plays at a level that any team would be proud to field. Last year of the current contract and what he is probably looking at is some kind of security for this and the next two years. I'd say go ahead and work it up, this year paying out as it is now and the next two years with smaller salaries but larger roster bonuses to create incentives for extended play for him and reduce the hit to our cap if he decides to retire.

As great as TD is, he can't outrun Father Time forever. And one morning in the next few years he's going to wake up and decide he's done enough. We need to give him a commitment that we'll be there for him in coming years but we need to make sure we don't hamstring our future for committing to something his body might not be able to fulfill a year or two from now.

It would say 25 percent on the players, and 75 percent on the coaching staff.  But, but, Shula is so good, and Rivera too.  It's so stupid.

You can't watch your QB get harassed and beaten up for 8 quarters of football an entire offseason apart, and still say we had enough talent. Obviously we didn't.

Gettleman has done a great job, but he blew it last offseason. You cannot polish that turd.

What does last offseason have to do with the super bowl? I said we had enough talent to win that game. And we did. There is nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.

If Shula had made adjustments, gave Remmers some help, we absolutely could have won that game. We were in it even with how shitty we looked. I know you love to take up for the players and I respect that because some take too much unfair abuse, but that game should have been ours

Von Miller, what else can you say? he was possessed and for good reasons. The NFL loves Peyton Manning, yes we know it's true... but, Miller won that game for the Broncos. Its not Cams fault or DGs or even Shula....

well, maybe a little Shula.

Von Miller is the bad guy here..

Welp, the Panthers stood by Davis for years when he couldn't play, but in 2015 you'd have to say Davis signed a relatively cheap contract to stay with the Panthers and has easily outperformed the money he's been paid thus far.

6/15/2015: Signed a three-year, $18 million contract. The deal contains $11.5 million guaranteed, including a $9 million signing bonus. Davis is eligible for annual $250,000 workout bonuses throughout the contract's life. 2017: $3.25 million (+ $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses), 2018: Free Agent

Like Olsen he's an old man in NFL years but still performing at the top of his game. In Olsen's case (6.5 mill cap hit) you could extend him and maybe get a little cap relief this year but TD is so damned cheap this year you couldn't do it for that reason. With neither guy though are you talking anywhere near the I believe what was a 10 mill number for Smitty's contract.

We need the veteran leadership of these two guys. Olsen is still signed for 2 more years so he wants to tear up his contract and get more, unlikely this year. TD is in the final year and is underpaid, so if he'll compromise on a relatively cheap contract extend him a year or two with some performance clauses.

One question on TD's contract: 2017: $3.25 million (+ $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses), what exactly does that mean cap wise?

We've got some tough decisions going forward, be interesting to see how much Gettleman values the locker room or is he ruthless?

We had so much talent that we couldn't even offensively outduel an aging Peyton Manning who was clearly a shell of himself to put it kindly, and could barely throw the ball 20 yards downfield?

SB50 should have been all but an easy layup for us like the Seahawks who relentlessly embarrassed the Broncos a few seasons before. I'm not arguing we weren't without self inflicted player/coaching gaffes, but our OL was and has been an ongoing deficiency that we have masked for years.

Also, lol at blaming Remmers being a starter on Shula.
