Quick Analysis: Matt Kalil's Film Is Depressing, But Steps He's Taking In The Off-Season Provides Hope

I have the same feeling as the OP.  I don't think we would have gone after him had he not been Ryan's brother, which is a problem IMO.  I haven't lost all hope but this is the one move that has me the most concerned.

With that said, I can't handle anymore feel good, cutesy vids/stories/tweets about the brothers either.  I hope he's a beast, but enough with the childhood pictures and whatnot.

I think Moton is a monster and really hope he does well.

I wouldn't let the new extra cheese ball media approach affect your opinions of the players or the team. I'm trying not to. It's been over the top shark jumping level of cheese though.

I figured i posted too many hype threads lately, so gotta bring up some issues I thought existed.

Don't know if there'll be any more of these type of threads. I think everywhere else is stout.

Turns that into quite the humorous joke. Gotta love that.

Quite the humorous joke indeed!  I must say, I enjoyed a hearty guffaw upon reading it.  That Ryan Kalil sure is a wry fellow, wouldn't you say?

Really though, your analysis articles are great, I just wanted to poke a little fun at this line.

I'm referring to the teams official media. They have gone full "hype video"

OP says we hype him up on this board... who hypes him up? We all know he's garbage, very poor player for DG to finally go out and spend money on, probably felt the pressure from seeing Cam get obliterated every week to "do something ", the best we can hope for us that he had bad coaching and we can turn him around, but for now, all anybody can go on is film,  in which he looks horrible

We don't need Matt Kalil to be a Pro Bowler. We just need him to be a middle of the road OT a la Michael Oher during our Superbowl run.

Kalil and Cam's shoulder are the two biggest question marks going into the season. I really could see Matt being AWFUL, being INCREDIBLE but I'm just hoping he falls somewhere in between.

Jeremy has said this, but we won't get a good idea of how Kalil looks until training camp. Going against Peppers will be a real test to see how he is doing. If he can block Peppers well enough to give Cam time, we'll be golden this year.

I will also say this (as one of the biggest Gettleman supporters there is) should Matt start looking awful during camp we need to go and find a veteran LT before the season starts.

DO NOT make the same mistake we made the year with bell and chandler.

One of the biggest problems the Vikings have faced over the last five years or so is that their entire team philosophy was built around the unstoppable Adrian Peterson. AP ruled that place and had the kind of impact on a team that you see in folks like Peyton Manning or Drew Brees. They become the main focus of the team to the detriment of everything else. Except, in this case, AP never carried them to the promised land like Manning and Brees did.

I would say that most of the blocking coaching Kalil has received in the league has dealt with run blocking for Peterson, with pass protection coming in a distant second, at least until AP had to sit out and Teddy Bridgewater started becoming kind of a thing. You can see it when you watch the blocking along the rest of the line as well as any support they get from RBs and TEs. It just doesn't look like pass blocking from a team in the top 3/4 of the league.

Match that up with recent surgery success (and right now, we have to take their word for it), a change of climate (those winter games are going to hurt a lot less at home than they used to), and playing alongside family... he might just have the season of his career. Sure would be nice.

I'm optimistic that a lot will play in his favor here.

Seems reasonable... therefore I must ignore and mock it.  It's the huddle way.

It would be nice but if Kalil plays well, let's keep paying him. If Moton is great it wouldn't be a bad thing for us to have all five spots locked down for a few years with Kalil, Norwalk, Kalil, Turner and Moton.

This. We need two starting OTs and a little depth at the position would be welcomed.

With that said, if those two starters end up being Moton and Williams then I'd be just fine with that too.

I think you have the balance results with what he has been given to work with.

One single draft pick in the first 3 rounds since 2011. That one pick is a pro bowler.

Other than that and inhereting Ryan Kalil he has had late round guys and cast offs.

We got to the Superbowl with Mike Remmers for Christ sake.

Exactly, our 1 3rd round pick is perennial bro bowler, our UDFA guard is a frikkin stud, Oher was trash in Tenn and played very well in 2015. Williams is a 4th rounder who has been a solid back up.  G-man hasn't given Matsko much to work with, EVER.

With all the injuries last year, it was the perfect storm of suckdom, so I'm not counting that (I wish I could forget).
