No. Not to hate on you, but no. If you want to swear off of meat, don't eat things that are supposed to be meat. You in, or you ain't. Don't be a poser/wannabe.

It's not supposed to be meat. It's supposed to be the shape of burger patty for easy eating purposes but it's a protein source more than anything. Usually black bean/quinoa burgers are my go to. And what would be the point of that? I still know that I would enjoy a burger and meat so being able to prepare the food and go about eating it the same way a carnivore would makes it enjoyable.

Whole Foods has a pretty massive selection of different veggie burgers. I find myself buying and trying new ones almost every time I go in there.

Jeremy, what plant-based protein powder do you use? I've been using vegasport for a while but am open to others.

I just got some of this for days I really hit the gym hard. Tastes amazing, much better than whey protein.

It's on Amazon.

Interesting insight into dietary habits. I find that after 8 years in Asia my tastes are varied and I've learned what I like but i can adapt too. As an example I deeply loathed boiled cabbage since the days of school dinners. However, Kimchi is an excellent way of making cabbage which I had always hated palatable. I can't forsake meat but I can control the amount and variety of it that I consume. I definitely believe personally, that dietary habits acquired as a younger man weren't sustainable as I moved into middle age. I eat lots of veggies and fruit (which is still better than processed sugar). I have never liked the texture of nuts but if i chop them fine and scatter them in a salad I don't notice them. I subscribe to the idea that a mixture of food groups is best. My advice is re-try foods that you previously avoided since your palate changes.

I have many vegan friends in the UK and frankly their pallid unhealthy appearance despite vitamin supplements makes me highly dubious of it as a lifestyle. Maybe that's just an odd case or a uniquely English thing though.

Well you can say you're vegan or vegeterian, but if you keep eating a lot of fatty foods or not controlling how much you intake while at it, your appearance won't help at all.

I know a lot of people who say they're vegan, but their appearance says their lifestyle involves a lot of unhealthy "vegan" options.

It all depends on the diet and whether you're controlling ypurself or not. Being vegan could literally be the best thing for your life, but not if you don't eat smart and in moderation.

Very true.

This is why I don't say vegan

Whole food plant based says you mainly eat plants with little to no processing.

Defined as nothing beneficial removed, nothing harmful added.

Mad props to you Igo.... I'm comfortable with intermittent fasting, once a month I'll splurge and immerse myself in duck donuts, chicken and waffles, etc. But I simply can't get away from grass fed ribeyes, Maine Lobsters, oysters, garlic marinated boneless skinless cage free antibiotic open range chicken. Food is too close to me in life, I tried juicing for ten days, hated each day

Never had an ER visit huh?

;)

Tends to change perspective on what is important.

Anyone interested should read this from a non vegan...

"The taste is unreal. When I tried a mini burger slathered in vegan mayo, mashed avocado, caramelized onions and Dijon prepared by San Francisco chef Traci Des Jardin at the company's headquarters in Redwood City, I was floored. The flavor was slightly less potent than meat, but if I didn't already know this burger was made from plants, I wouldn't have guessed it. ."

I'd be willing to try something like this.

If I can get away eating one of these, low LDLs, low heart rate, low blood pressure, low inflammatory markers in my body (ESR, CRP), and down several points on the bmi then I've reached internal nirvana

Intermittent Fasting is so beneficial that it's ridiculous. It broke me out of a weight loss stall and despite my food addiction I actually look forward to my fasts. It actually taught me quite a lot about myself and how superficial and deceptive "hunger" can be.

It answered a lot in my life. I do that, cut out processed foods and anything artificial and I eat like an absolute savage. Each person has a plan but this works for me, I've lost weight and all my labs are better than ever before. I actually like that I've flipped my metabolism and turned a fire inside me

That's very similar to what I do. I eat more meat now than before and am far healthier because I cut out junk and carbs. I read The Obesity Code and The Complete Guide to Fasting by Dr. Jason Fung and they were both real eye openers. What really gets me is the amount of bad information out there being touted as fact. Jason Fung has a lot of good stuff on YouTube as well if you're interested.

Igo is preaching the truth. I have been a vegan since 1986. In my mid fifties now with no health issues at all and still play organized sports. It's not for everyone but like others have stated, cut out the artificial and highly processed crap and you will be much better off.

while we're on the subject of transformation i'd like to share my own little weight loss story. so around 2012 or so, i was very portly. i was depressed and every time i saw myself in the mirror i hated myself a little bit more.

i know people say that all the time, but this isn't just any old overweight human story. you see, i was addicted to eating human brains.

IMG_7625.thumb.PNG.268d50ab3f614c697899f9c9d421eb6c.PNG

i mean, it started getting really out of hand by that year. it just got to a point where i'd go to body farms looking for a fresh corpse to open up and dig in because i just had to eat a brain everyday, and i didn't have the kind of access to fresh brains like johnny depp does. anyway, people started noticing my appearance and the fact that i'd disappear from shoots for like 7 hours at a time and they kind of set me up with an intervention mediator.

IMG_7626.thumb.JPG.6dbe0f89b4f79767a8d2e6350163f3ca.JPG

that was such a humbling day. i mean mostly we just BSed around and he was asking me just how far i could fit that model saturn V rocket up my ass when this pic was taken, but i'll never forget what he told me. he said, "michael, you've got a lot going for you, and everybody would hate it to see you let go of all of that over an addiction, a dangerous addiction at that because of the risk of CJD. also, follow me on twitter and listen to me talk about B.o.B."

i decided that i wouldn't let this addiction define me. i was going to overcome it, no matter what it took. i went cold turkey. the withdrawals were out of this world. the brain is the fattiest organ, so i was basically sweating ketone bodies out as my metabolism started functioning normally again. i was in hell for six months. i had to scale back my schedule because i was so fatigued, i had random nightmares, i would wake up in a cold sweat with heart palpitations. i almost DIED. and then, with each day, i started feeling better than the last. about a year later, i was back to normal. i had officially felt like i had felt before the addiction, before justin gordon-levitt introduced me to human brain at a benefit gala for pacific garbage patch awareness. here's a shot of me from earlier this year.

IMG_7627.JPG.4a58241766b4f2857f8a9dfd2efe80bf.JPG

now all i eat is chia seeds and packing peanuts. i still like the occasional brain when the opportunity presents itself...

IMG_7628.thumb.PNG.12e28844791f830c81ba19cce83a41a6.PNG

but like everyday? i can't comprehend that anymore. eh, it's not for me. maybe every once in a while, or every other day.

it just goes to show you the strength of the human body, and the will and strength of the human brain when faced with a challenge, especially one that seems so insurmountable like addiction. i mean my brain is really really strong bc i ate so many of them haha. but whether you have a drug addiction, or a food addiction, and you've never even eaten so much as an animal's brain once, you can still do it. i'm happy to be in the company of other people who have overcome issues with their body and diet and took control and are better for it.

and as always, thanks for watching.

er...reading. thanks for reading.

Butternut squash risotto, paprika, thyme, dry white wine and gluten free vegetable broth. I've never cooked risotto before, it takes time and attention but worth it.
