I think there are a lot of fans still hoping for the "twin towers" dream to materialize.  We WANT Funchess to be good and have two big feared WR threats.  But it's not looking too promising.

I very much hope it'll still materialize, I just think it's highly unlikely. Funchess would have to improve by leaps and bounds. Total night and day transformation. At this point, I just want him to not be a liability. We gotta stop putting him out there simply because he was a 2nd round pick that we traded up for. As of right now, he really hasn't earned any playing time going forward. Make him earn it. That's all I ask.

Too many posters are still stuck on the potential aspect of Funchess and are looking past the fact that he's basically been the equivalent of Byron Bell at WR.

Funchess was very green when he came here. He was fast and a big body but his routes were poor and he really didn't play that much in college. He really hasn't gotten that much work here either. The reason I still think he has potential is because he has only gotten one season's worth of opportunities even though he has been here for 2 years. You can say he hasn't delivered and you would be right. Still he hasn't really gotten the work he needs to have the confidence to perform under pressure. It goes hand in hand. If you don't perform each time you get a chance you get fewer chances. Then pressure mounts to make each chance count. The pressure causes you to choke which makes what you hope to avoid happen. I think this year will be his best. I know, the bar is pretty low......

I would feel differently if he didn't regress so badly last year. I had a lot of hope for him when he capped the 2015 regular season off with 8 catches for 120 yards and a TD, then we heard all the great things about how he was absolutely killing it in the off-season... then the regular season came. 7 games in 2016 with less than 20 receiving yards. Five times he received 5+ targets. Not once did he catch more than two of them.

He was just really, really bad in 2016 and pretty much doused my hopes for him after I was really excited to see how he was going to develop.

Voth's view on Shepard's role:

I would assume he starts off in a Philly-like role and goes from there. However, his contributions towards Special Teams should make his value even more superior

i was thinking that shep would take ginn's role and samuel would take philly's role. both would be upgrades.

I don't care who he got beat by in Tampa. This is 2017 and this is the Carolina Panthers. Have you not ever heard of player development? What did Ginn do before he got here? I'm not saying he's the next Steve Smith but he can be a productive player. Also, your'e fuging annoying.

Ted Ginn never developed anything, he just got more chances in Carolina. If Cam had those Cardinals receivers Ginn wouldn't even sniff the ball.

Oh lord. You obviously have never seen a slimmer of Shepard playing in your life. His dominance in OTAs is not a surprise.

Oh and you have, you just look a gifs all day and call that tape. Sheppard was a 4th string receiver in Tampa theirs no getting around that.

You do remember Funchess was "dominant" in last years offseason. Being a training camp hero gets you know where in the regular season.

It's too early in the game to have this type of dumb on both sides of the aisle as far as I'm concerned, but y'all do y'all. I'm gonna wait at least until training camp before I label  rookies, specialists, and functional and/or practical greenhorns as heroes and zeros.

So true.  He did look like he was developing quite well late in his rookie season.  Those every other week TDs were pretty nice.  He made some great grabs, I think he had at least 1 or 2 contenders for top 10 plays of the season.  But of course, KB wasn't on the field, so Cam was forced to look to Funchess.  2016 was a whole different story and we went weeks at a time without Funchess doing much of anything.

Hoping that with new coaches, things will change.  It can't hurt that Cotch was on the field with Funch his rookie season and knows that he CAN make some big plays when given the chance.

But, I'm not sure Funchess WILL get the chance on the field with the additions of CMC, Samuel & Shepard.  We have 3 shiny new toys... Funchess is really going to have to show he's hungry and do something outstanding to break ahead of those 3.  I know there are 3 WR roles (X,Y, Z), so it's not a given that Funchess's role will be usurped..., so maybe he'll still get targets and get a chance to build that confidence, but... I'm a bit pessimistic
