The Riot Report is an up and coming Panthers coverage site for the Roaring Riot. Hoping to become a hotbed for Panther fans, this recent addition hopes to add quality analysis, articles, and quality writing on all things Panther related. With the RR already reaching a wide range of Panther fans around the world, this new extension will hope to add to the atmosphere the RR provides.

A recent article popped my eye concerning analysis on Norwell and Turner. Evaluating their season and impact, this article takes a quick look at what their strengths, weaknesses, and potential appear to be. Considering both guards will be set to be looking at the free agent market next year, it's probably wise to take a look at both of these talents to determine which is a priority to keep.

The Riot Report takes a look at these two guards and compares them on pass-blocking, run-blocking, and potential. Examining Norwell's importance and Turner's steady improvement, this article determines who is the better player now, and who has the most potential.

Quote

Turner did not improve in 2016, but he did not regress as many have stated. Instead, he played as a hog molly who mauls defenders and made an impact against good defensive tackles.

Norwell wins with strength, balance, and agility. He is great as a run and pass blocker and the only way to improve is to gain more experience.

What do you think? Is Norwell or Turner a priority of locking up in the future, or perhaps even both? Do you think they could improve and get even better?

We have the money to lock up both for the next 5 years which would stabilize our line and hopefully give us consistency for a while.

I believe Oher has an "out" after this year in his contract which would only mean $2 mill in dead space compared to the $5 million each year for the next two years.

Hate to say it, but if Kalil performs this year, Oher is probably gone after this and they can use some of that space towards Turner/Norwell

I thought my eyes were right.  Norwell is the better player today, whereas Turner has the higher upside long term.

I would love to see us lock both down long term, even if it meant pulling some money from the defensive side of the ball....looking at you Star.

Don't underestimate how much the injuries and disarray on the OL impacted Turner last year. Kicking him out to RT was a mistake in hindsight, but we had to try to do something. Norwell wasn't completely immune to that same disarray, but at least he was able to solely focus on playing LG all season long.

Without a doubt, Carolina needs to take whatever action need be to retain these guys. Ryan Kalil is approaching the end of his career. I thought Larson played well last year in place of him, so that is promising.

Whenever you're able to keep the same OL the length of the season, the team as a whole benefits. The same applies here in my opinion. With potentially two new starters on the outside, there will be growing pains but chemistry will eventually develop. If they're able to carry that same chemistry into next season, then they'll already be ahead of the game.

    • I find it more like now that I have been forced to watch Young so much it isn’t as much of a shock to my senses.   Desensitized they call it.   For real, it just looks normal almost now. Where the first game of 2023 I wasn’t sure what I was looking at it was so out of bounds for NFL type play. I literally couldn’t make sense of what I had seen vs Atlanta that first week.
    • Lynch in SF. Great is subjective but he has done pretty well there.
    • Sure, except Stroud has the ability to stretch the field with deep passes. He did that often last night with ease, but couldn’t connect on many due to being flustered by the defense. BY9 gets flustered and can’t throw screens, let alone even think about any deeper passes. Stroud would’ve changed the franchise and done more with the situation last year. My thought at least.    the hope is that last year showed tepper that he needed to step back from football decisions. There’s a positive in most situations and maybe we’ll see a new tepper in the near future.
