This isn't true. Many times throughout the off-season program players have notices in their lockers that they will need to submit a drug test that very day. An individual will show up from the league on selected dates and perform drug tests on select players. To your point tho, players are usually notified when the drug tester will be coming around and on what dates. To say guys do not get tested after the combine isn't factual.

You only get randomly tested during the season if you've failed a test in the past, hence being in "the protocol" 

every now and then someone will randomly be chosen but the incidence is very low, and there's only like one month out of the year they can even drug test you if you've never done anything wrong. 

Of course there are bullshit random screenings like when pat mcaffee got tested after lighting someone up on a punt return. 

It's a system designed to allow as many players as possible to smoke as much as they want while making examples out of a select few for talk radio points. 

The reason being owners want the players smoking weed but are worried about optics.
