OTA Observations Day 7

Recommended Posts

That's the quote that jumped out to me also. By the time we get thru preseason games this offense is going to look a lot different. By midseason people will be bitching that we don't throw down field enough. Imagine CMC, Samuel, and fozzy all on the field at once. CHECK DOWN MADNESS!!! Is it too late to sign Alex Smith?

Damn that stupid rule. So dumb for someone who's not even enrolled at this point to have to wait.

Yeah, if you're coming out early and done with school (for now anyway), it makes no sense to penalize the players (so naturally the NFL's gonna do just that).

Fozzy vs. McCaffery- let's look at the plus side. Fozzy's getting his routine down while the new guy has to wait.

I know it's Fozzie, but this seems promising in the evolution:

  • Running back Fozzy Whittakericon-article-link.gif appears to be on pace to set a very unofficial record for receptions during OTAs. Every time you look up, Whittaker is turning up-field after making a catch out of the backfield.

The way I figure, this would all be McCaffery if he was here and based on Stewart catching 8 balls last year, this looks good. Damn that stupid rule. So dumb for someone who's not even enrolled at this point to have to wait.

Not trying to reopen the Fozzie vs CAP debate (I'm 50/50 at this point, let them fight it out during preseason), but I wonder if Fozzie is gaining the edge, or is just standing in for CMC so that the rest of the offense can start "evolving".

Having a better short passing game will actually help us open up downfield opportunities.

I CMC/Samuel/fozzie are the evolution and future. I don't see CAP or really even another RB like Stewart on the team for a while. We'll probably see more work from FBs than we have since hoover and that's where the power in the run game will come from.

I don't see us completely going away from a power runner. I'd like to see Cam getting fewer of those short yardage and goal line carries, not more.

Agreed, about Cam but I think the power run will be kept to a minimum and short yardage will likely come from a FB who will probably be on field either clearing a path or carrying the ball himself. If the FB is on the field a majority of the time anyway, it will help cut down on the predictability of having a power runner on the field. And don't underestimate CMC in those situations either.

That stuck out to me too, but I was in a hurry and didn't put the quote in there. I can't wait to see CMC catch some of those.

In the same article:

  • It’s hard to evaluate running backs when there’s no contact, but Cameron Artis-Payneicon-article-link.gif had a nice day, earning praise from the coaches after making the right reads on a few inside runs.

And that "inside running" is the value that CAP brings to the team.

All that's left is the coaches evaluation as to what is more valuable to the team in a backup... a RB whose skills are matched (and likely exceeded) by both CMC and Samuel or a RB whose skills are matched (and exceeded) by Stew.

    • It didn’t feel like we’re the Bills bc we’re not a consistent conference contender yet we’re a rebuilding team. But with the game on the line we played just like the Bills went straight down the field and scored a tuddy then converted a 2pt conversion I have to give credit where credit is due. And the chiefs played us like we were the Bills in an AFC championship game, drive down the field and kicked a walk off FG to win at the end very similar to me. Are saying our defense stunk yesterday? Vs an elite offense team with elite coaching an elite QB man idk what you want them to do. KC does these things to the best defenses in the league consistently to win AFC chips and Super Bowls let’s not devalue who they are. I saw us play KC to the wire and barely lose defense did its thing as much as it could. Bingo!!! We’re also forgetting how injured we’ve been defensively this year, yes we need to build up the D but adding a few pieces and D Browns successful rehab should make us a very strong unit again. Couple that with the offense we saw yesterday and we’re winning our division.
    • Canales deserves a lot of credit. I'm very pleased. He's definitely making strides with Bryce. I also think some of his lack of commitment to Bryce as the starter is to motivate Bryce. I think he liked what he saw when Bryce was benched.  Even the Defense looks tremendously better with just a couple more pieces getting healthy. Wonnum has made our pass rush viable again.  I would love to see this team with one more good player across the defensive front, DT or an edge rusher.
    • I didn’t see any limitations yesterday
