Jonathan Stewart #1 Elusive HB w13-17

The Huddler

Recommended Posts

Stew seems to be one of those guys that feeds off competition. Just like when he and Dwill used to see who could one up the other in a game.

I think we have brought that back with the CMC pick. If so, he NFC south is in for one hell of a pounding by our run game. If stew gets loose in the secondary, there isn't a safety in this division that wants to meet him head on.

The Panthers have enough talent on offense for there to be absolutely zero excuses this year.

All the talent in the world  doesn't mean poo if the  oline fails again. We have no idea what we have in our OTs

Hopefully he helps us make a deep run in the playoffs. That seems a lot more important to me than if his Madden ratings goes up. Apparently our priorities are very different...

It can be both dude. We have no control of either so they arent priorities. They are wishes.

And thanks Zod for comming in and vulturing my freakin pie

There's no way to cover all depth at all spots. Always a weakness. Our starters appear to be solid enough everywhere and in some places we have good depth. That said, we upgraded LT, RT, WR and RB on offense. That's a solid move considering the defense got better as well.

I'm hoping all the time off and rest will help us be better at avoiding injuries. If we stay healthy, we should be really, really good.

Agree you can't have starters 2 deep at all positions but sometimes our starters weren't starter quality and our backups were garbage. Like last year when we had Bradbury and Worley starting and guys like Sanchez as backups. If we had gotten a few vets to start and then brought the rookies along as depth and ultimately starters we wouldn't have been so bad. A guy who is not starter quality can be a young guy with starter potential who needs experience. Agree our starters are better. I just think at safety and corner for example we are still too thin depthwise unless you think guys like Teddy Williams could come in and fill the void without a huge drop off.

Of course it can be both but when you mention 1 and not the other it usually means that is your focus and priority. And you don't have to control something to prioritize one thing over the other. If someone gives you two wishes most intelligent people prioritize what is most important and say that first. That is what I said. Logic 101 for you slow folks or those who have never debated or had a course in logic.

That may be true but a good to decent team knows how to mask those weaknesses. Shula had a lot of high risk/high reward schemes that just didn't work the second year around (in terms of after the SB). We can't have tall, slow, possession WRs constantly doing fly routes and in the slot. The game becomes to predictable say that point.

Logic 101 says you cannot say something without listing all other things you care about more than that thing you feel like mentioning? So if I say I want pizza I have to first clarify that I would prefer a steak dinner?

It was just a casual remark for God's sake man.

Madden rating was ongoing joke  but I have been big advocate of J-Stew and his importance to the Panthers team. Hence one of the reason I have been asking for a 2nd TE that can block

J-Stew will pass the 1,000 + yd marker and he has toned down  so look for more speed & explosiveness with the same power.

Teddy to me isn't depth anymore, which is nice, he's not good. I think Elder is a solid player and likely CB4 moving Sanchez to CB5. I think Sanchez is actually decent depth. A 5th round pick last year, he just wasn't ready to start and he isn't start material, he's backup material. I like Bradberry, Worley, Munnerlyn, Elder and Sanchez much better than last year. Leonard Johnson was a nice guy, but not as good as Captain and heck, he wasn't healthy until Bene got released.

Safety wise, I have no idea what we have in Marlowe. He was hurt all of last year but I am thinking he's likely a better backup than Boston since we had no issue getting rid of him. I'd like to see another guy emerge as depth, maybe that McCray kid, because Colin Jones, like Teddy Williams is not good enough to be a backup, they are STers and honestly, I hope guys like Shepard make them expendable. I'd rather have a young player who can play CB or S be on the roster because we have another gunner or STs player.

I definitely think our starters are much better than last year all around:

QB - Newton

OL - Kalil, Norwell, Kalil, Turner, Moton (I'm betting on him over Williams)

RB - Stewart/McCaffery

TE - Olsen

WR - KB, Samuel, Funchess (or Shepard/CJ2)

DL - Peppers, Addison, Short, Star and Butler (not a starter, but a much heavier rotation)

LB - Kuechly, TD, Shaq

CB - Bradberry, Worley, Munnerlyn

S - Coleman, Adams

I feel really good about that team.

I definitely feel better about this team versus last year. Then again Gettleman did what I have wanted and advocated all along. Bring in vets like Adams and Munnerlyn instead of counting on more rookies at key positions so guys like Elder can rotate in and learn from the vets. Give Cam some weapons instead of picking defense in the first 3 rounds and get a hopefully legit left tackle and depth /potential starter at right tackle. And I loved the McCaffrey and Samuel picks. The only thing I wish we had done was pick up a TE in the middle rounds with TEs being so plentiful and deep this year.

Yep, I agree about being predictable, plus the rash of injuries, it was the perfect storm last year. The one thing that I found amazing was how much 2016 seemed to mirror 2004 with all the injuries.

I'm just ready for training camp to get here so we can start seeing how everyone gels.

Don't see him getting a 1000 yards unless he can stay healthy and that is a huge unless. Plus  I think we are going to pass a lot more and use no huddle which gives him playing time but emphasizes his blocking more than his passing. Plus I think we use more empty backfield sets swinging running backs out in space. I expect Stewart will get most of his carries in short yardage situations and in the redzone. That doesn't mean we won't use him elsewhere but I doubt his carries go up or stay the same even with Cam not running it much.

Then why the arguing and making a big deal about my comment. You are the one that made the comment at me when I wasn't even directing my initial comment to you.  If it wasn't a big deal then mind your own business and there isn't an issue to start with.

I diagree, you must not have listend to Ron Rivera's interview we are still going to be a power running team, but with new wrinkles added to the offense that attacks defenses with  a High / Lo scheme

- 2 HB formation

-Playaction

-Bootlegs

-Jetscreens

-Dump-offs / Flats

-quick passes

-seam route

- wheels

- etc

People forget that key to a good defense like 2013 & 2015 was predicated on the strength of the running game it's a symbiotic relationship

The one name besides Christian McCaffrey that is absolutely safe is Jonathan Stewart. In fact, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera stated yesterday that Stewart won’t be effected much by the addition of CMC. “Jonathan will always do what he does” Rivera said after Tuesday’s practice. “Christian will have his role and will do those things accordingly. I’m not going to tell you specifically how we are going to do it.”

Apparently, Jonathan Stewart’s role is not only safe, but unchanged.
