I agree. 

Dickson isn't a world beater but I would assume the coaching staff views him as average/solid. From my fan perspective, he doesn't do anything that stands out terribly bad or good. Sometimes average will do, in the right circumstances. 

As we all know, there is WAY more to a roster spot than just talent and abilities. 

Althoguh Rivera may keep a guy longer than we would like, I truly believe that outside of a handful of players, every position is up for grabs. 

There just needs to be clear evidence that what they are goong to get is overall better than what they already have. 

To your point, I just don't see that yet.

I think the hope train for next year's draft is all we have. I don't think there is anything we can do now. Even the young guys are likely TE3 at best and aren't likely to pay dividends in 2017.

ETA: I forgot to reply to your other comment. No, we couldn't arguably sign a guy off the street and upgrade over Dickson unless that guy is Barnidge and that contract value likely won't be better than Dickson. I am not a Dickson lover in any way shape, form or sexuality, but the dude had 19 targets last year. What did you expect? I want to upgrade at TE and I was one of the guys who would have been happy with Howard at 8 or Njoku at 40. That didn't happy and I'm happy with McCaffery/Samuel, but I do not believe there is anyone better and cheaper than Dickson on the street.

Truthfully, getting down to it, I think Dickson remains here ultimately because of Rivera's loyalty. He has a proven track record of allowing clearly underwhelming players he likes to stick around here longer than they should. Sione Fua, Nate Chandler, Byron Bell, Mike Remmers, I'm sure I'm forgetting someone else, but you should get my point.
