Michael Oher did not attend the first day of voluntary organized team activities Tuesday, but a league source said the Carolina Panthers offensive tackle plans to attend a mandatory June 13-15 minicamp.

Oher also plans to play for the Panthers this season if cleared from the concussion protocol, the source said.

Thoughts?

If his mugshot is any indication, it looks like he's close to 400 pounds than he is to his ideal playing weight right now. Hope he gets to work. I'd love to have him back if he's cleared.

maybe he could play DT.

it doesn't say he would be playing tackle for the panthers.

It would be nice to at least have him as a back up LT but I'm not counting on it.

Yeah, I think this could be the best case scenario.

Kalil starts at LT.

Williams / Moton battle for starting RT

Oher hopefully sits on the bench as backup LT, maybe even inactive most games if Matt K is healthy..., give him a chance to get back in the groove slowly, rebond with the team, little pressure.  Assuming Oher is fit enough that he *could* play if Kalil were injured, this would give us good LT depth without having to overpressure Moton in his rookie season.  I really don't want Moton's potential sacrificed by constantly switching him back and forth between left and right, at least not right away.  Give him some time to settle in at right, then if he shows promise, gradually up his reps at left in practice.

Has anyone spoken about what exactly is keeping him in protocol?

I don't know how rigorous the neurological exams taking place are. I mean, could it be that he has an underlying issue that comes off as concussion related, such as ADHD or some kind of emotional problem?

It just doesn't make sense that he is still in protocol for a concussion that occurred 3/4 of a year ago.

Supposedly he's "working his fanny off" according to Gettleman, So that would seem to indicate he's at least in step three or four and has been for a while now. So what gives? I mean, and this is going to sound rather cold, but if you've got brain damage enough to not be able to clear protocol after 9 months, it might be time to go ahead and hang up the cleats.

I don't want to see any of our players ruin their lives after football for the sake of the Panthers. I understand that players want to go out there and play. But, honestly, how long do you give someone in these circumstances before you basically separate yourself from the liability they are bringing onto themselves by not being able to pass physical and neurological examinations?

Indeed.

I never realized that concussions and their after-effects affected proper diet, portions, and fitness choices.

Honestly it can. Common physical side effects of concussions include headaches, dizziness, light-headedness, and vertigo all of which can impact your ability to workout. Other common lingering side effects are lack of energy and depression and depression often leads to fork to face issues.

I don't know this to be 100% true but I don't think he has had a chance to be removed from the concussion protocol for a few months. Once the season ended and he was in the protocol, he remains there all off season until official testing begins again and I am not sure when that date is exactly.

He very well could still not be able to get out of the protocol, but I don't think he has been tested for awhile.

I'm like you, I don't know it to be 100% accurate either, but I think you're right as far as there basically being no need to have him tested in an attempt to get out of the protocol during the offseason; Which suggests it's not a scenario where he's trying and trying and just can't pass.

As has already been mentioned, DG said he had been working out a while back and I'm leaning towards the reason he's not participating in OTA's having to do with the Uber incident in Nashville rather than his concussion last year.  Who the hell really knows at this point though.

    • When we drafted Luke, we already had Cam, Smith, Olsen, Stewart, Deangleo, Gross, Kalil, CJ, Hardy, Beason, TD, Gamble (and maybe more I'm forgetting), we had a lot of great pieces in place. Going pure BPA for a player with Luke's potential when the LB you already have is different when you already have all those pieces in place.  Our OL right now is probably in a better shape than that team and our RBs and TE have potential compared to proven vets back then, but after that, the 2012 roster was in a far better shape than we are right now. We need a #1 WR, DEs, LBs, DBs, C, and depending who you ask a QB.  Going BPA at pick #5 when that player is a DT and your current best player on either side of the ball is a DT, seems irresponsible. If he's the only player they like that high left, then you trade back and go with position of more need at a slot that makes sense for the player while adding other picks.  If you trade back and he falls because other teams don't need/want a DT, then you consider him at that point because of the value.
    • This sounds like the same back and forth when we drafted a LB when we already had a LB or as mentioned prior back to back DLs. I want the BPA, if it is another DT so be it. (No not a kicker/punter for those people that think they are funny))
    • I’m hoping SMU messes it all up and wins out. Imagine the SEC & BI0 would crap themselves trying to “fix” the problem.
