Panthers Make Changes To Scouting Department

Recommended Posts

Quote

CHARLOTTE – The Carolina Panthers have made several adjustments within the scouting department.

"You are always looking to improve your scouting operation," general manager Dave Gettleman said. "We made some moves after taking a look at everything. I feel really good about our personnel group, both pro and college. We feel this strengthens us even further."

  • Mark Koncz is the new director of player personnel. He was previously the team's director of pro scouting, a position he held since 2000.
  • Jeff Morrow is the new director of college scouting. He was named the assistant director of college scouting last year.
  • Matt Allen is the new director of pro personnel. He was previously a pro scout.
  • Don Gregory is now a senior executive scout, working pro and college. He was previously the director of player personnel and also spent 10 years as the director of college scouting.
  • Jonathan Fields is now a pro scouting assistant. He was previously a college scouting assistant.
  • Eli Montague is now an area scout. He was previously a BLESTO scout.

What's a BLESTO scout?

Do you all think we continue to roll into the season without a new asst GM OR a team president?  Seems that would increase Dave's workload a lot to have both those positions vacant.

I think essentially it's a third party agency that is used by NFL teams to assist in scouting duties.  Not positive, but I think a BLESTO scout is typically reserved for "junior level" scouts (with the best ones being plucked for other roles after fairly short stints as BLESTO scouts).

Don't know if all that is 100% accurate, but I believe that's the general concept.

Giving everyone promotions/raises to make it harder for Beane and McD to poach them?

I could see that with most, but Gregory's change doesn't sound like a promotion. Assistant GM would have been a promotion.

What Gregory is doing sounds more like the kind of "pull back" move that Gettleman did with the Giants before he got the Panthers job.

Makes me wonder if Gregory might be thinking of retiring.

Curious how this shows us still with National.  I seem to remember that Gettleman changed us to BLESTO soon after he got here.  Maybe it's an old article.  It's a good description, none the less.

Searched the article by title. Google lists it as being from July 2015.

Even so, I could have sworn the change was made prior to that. Maybe they just didn't check their facts.

I was always under the impression that team president and GM were completely separate roles.

GM was for everything we all know and love about football as far as on the field product (players, etc.), and team president was more the operational side of the organization as a business, like marketing, ticket prices, what company to use to sell hot dogs in the stadium...stuff like that.

I could be very wrong though.
