Yeah been at those places before and dug around.    Seems prices have went down a bit and you can get a lot of stuff on Amazon for instance from 14-20 bucks.    A lot of times they come with audio cd and download code too.

I'll occasionally hit an estate sale if I'm not busy. Find a box full or albums and if you see a couple albums out of 20-25 in the box, go ahead and buy the box for $20, keep the ones you want and trade the rest for store credit at your neighborhood record shop.

When I first started collecting, I definitely had the bug. I would go to the old Lunchbox location after work every payday and spend between $50-$100 on mostly new records for probably a year. Eventually I realized I had to reel it in. Now I go probably once every couple of months, and I try to keep every trip under $50. Slow and steady wins the race with vinyl collecting.

The key to not going nuts in record stores for me is planning out exactly what I want to buy beforehand and not veering from the path. It's so easy to fall victim to the record store sirens that call out as you're heading down the aisle to the release you want. "I mean, what am I doing if I don't own the remastered OK Computer?" You just have to do your best to resist and add it to the list for the next trip.

It also depends on whether you're wanting to collect new releases from current bands or classics. I have a healthy mix of both, but if you're more inclined to collect classic records then you can definitely save money on used ones. I would recommend Repo Records for used and Lunchbox for new. Amazon is another great option, especially price-wise, but the experience of shopping in the record store is a big part of the hobby for me.

I went Saturday to Lunchbox and Repo.  Found some classics at Repo for cheap and bought around 5 new albums between the two stores.    Most were cheaper than Amazon or at most a buck or two more which I'm fine with for local store.     Now I'm staring at a Amazon cart of like 7 new records lol.    I'm trying to find my favorite stuff first but I listen to a ton of music so it's adding up.

I've dropped thousands of dollars the past two years on records. Whenever I travel, I hit up the local stores. It's a rush and definitely a drug Especially when you find that rare album that you can't find anywhere. I stay away from online stuff for the most part because it takes away from the excitement of finding something you've wanted in a store. Just picked up King Crimsons' second album on 200 gram at the local store here where I live.

Yeah I'm probably going to drop a good bit at first to get my personal favorites.   I'm not buying really old stuff with hopes I can find it around town but the newer stuff I don't expect to find or if I do it won't be much cheaper.

Absolutely. I did this with Pink Floyd's "Animals" before it was officially re-released. I could've snagged one off of eBay, but the wait was worth the feeling I got when I thumbed through the stack at Repo and saw the flying pig album cover that had eluded me for so long.

Seems like it's getting harder to find stuff in like bargain bins at Repo and places with the increased popularity.    I just started myself but went with a friend for years now and we found better stuff back then.    I think I need to go around and check Goodwills but I've heard mixed stuff.

I kind of want to check out the dude in Monroe again but that store is just tight and it was hot as crap up in there last time I was there.

Update:  I'm pretty addicted at this point.   This weekend I found Rush "Caress of Steel", Foreigner 4, and Cheap Trick "Heaven Tonight" for $12 total, all in great condition with lyric sheet and record in anti-static sleeve lol.    I've also bought too many "new" records off Amazon and Walmart (yeah Walmart has good prices for vinyl and free shipping on 35 or more, their search sucks on the site so you have to look around).   I found Metallica's Garage Inc. on there for like $26 and it's normally like close to 50 ($47 on Amazon right now).     Every time I want to slow down I see an album I want drop on Amazon to like $15 lol.    

I've been trying to give local shops business if they are within $2-3 of online prices.   Had to pick up Dark Side of the Moon at Repo because I felt like it's required right? Haha.  

Before Christmas I want to get a new turntable, I'm looking at Pro-Ject either the $399 model or the $599 one.   Recently got some new bookshelf cheapers, Pioneer BS22's for $59 total shipped, usually like $140.

I went to Lunchbox yesterday once I realized the Panthers sucked...  Figured record digging would be better than suffering thru the game...  Splurged on a couple new releases...   Lukas Nelson (Willie's son) and then a John Prine album....  Listened to those instead of supporting the NFL yesterday afternoon....

Update:  I'm still addicted.   Recently got a spin clean system (not the spin clean but a $40 knockoff, works nice) and been cleaning my used finds and new records too (they come with junk on them too).

Nothing beats finding a $99 cent record, cleaning it up, and finding out it plays perfect (just did this with a Billy Joel).     

If anyone is ever in Greensboro, go to Hippo Records, it's awesome, there's a few others near it too.   I enjoy Repo and Lunchbox but that place has quality records, good prices, etc.    I found an STP Core, Music on Vinyl, that's like $50 or more at most places (not sold new anymore) for $30.    Also a bunch of great used records in good condition and cheap.    Didn't have all the time in the world (was before a Foo Fighters concert) but probably would have spent $200 bucks in there lol.

November 10th I'm getting four Pearl Jam reissues and Master of Puppets remaster, so that's something to look forward too.

Long term (this year hopefully) an upgraded turntable (looking at Pro-Ject Carbon or Esquire) and possible a new receiver after that, maybe next year (unless some good deals pop-up).

Anyone get anything this shopping week?   Amazon did a buy 1 get 1 half off (damn you amazon) and got some more expensive stuff I've been trying to get.    That deal even worked on Boxsets, insane.     Between that and a couple visits to local stores for used vinyl, it's been a wallet denter.

A couple weeks ago I finally upgraded turntable to that Pro-ject and love it.

I didn't do record store day though, didn't feel like waiting in lines and seems the stuff is a bit overpriced.
