PFF Samuel Monson: Panthers Offense Is The One To Watch Out For, Not The Bucs

To be honest, I think you have been unduly harsh towards Funchess this offseason.  Has he lived up to what we want thus far? Obviously not.  But he has shown the ability to get open (he's not targeted much, though, so it has often gone unnoticed), and he can make the big catch.  The flip side is that he also has dropped some balls that he absolutely needs to catch, and I don't get the sense that he has earned Cam's trust yet.  Generally, he's too inconsistent, and certainly needs to tighten up some things.  But I don't think it's fair or just to say he's shown nothing.  IMO, I think he's a guy that needed a year or two on the bench to develop instead of being thrust into a key role out of the box.

Bottom line, I get being disappointed and wanting more out of him, but he has shown signs that he can be good if he continues to develop and becomes more consistent.  Will he do that?  Who knows, and that's why we can't count on it.  It's also why I think this year is pivotal for him.  Either he steps up, or he'll be relegated to our #5 non-dressing receiver at best.

To be fair, it's not just this offseason. I was never a fan of drafting Funchess. He was always a poor option to pair with KB. Unfortunately, he's even underperformed what I expected to get out of him. Really hoping he'll have a breakout season. Even 600-700 yards would be a welcomed bonus for the offense.

I definitely agree with this.  I like KB, and think he can be dominant, but he needs more speed opposite to take some of the coverage off him.  To be honest, Funchess was a guy I wanted nothing to do with prior to that draft.  But once we took him, I tried to look at him with fresh eyes and could see where the team felt he has good upside.  Unfortunately, he has not developed as fast as I would prefer, but I have seen enough flashes to maintain hope.  And since we knew he was a bit raw and very young coming in, I can understand the slow development.

They say it can take up to three years for a receiver to figure things out in the NFL, so this is the season that he needs to demonstrate that he is getting it and starting to put things together (I'm not looking for him to be a finished product, but he needs to show more than flashes).  I don't expect big numbers from him since there are only so many balls to go around, but I want to see him be a legitimate threat that can burn teams if they ignore him

Looking at last season you need to get up to about the 3rd or 4th passing offense in the league before the 3rd receiving option gets in the 600-700 range. That would be stellar given that our two rookies  will also be used in the passing game.

Good Point.   I would rather seem Cam have 4K+ yards and spread it out over 5 or 6 players.   I can seeing Olsen getting 1000 yds though.

Norman turned Evans into a blubbering baby. I think Bradberry can handle him at this point.

Samuel is gonna go off at some point this season. He is getting knocked for hands and route running, but I think that's all bs. Come game day he is gonna be nasty. I envision a stretch of several games where he is just on fire.

Also, CMC is kinda ignored. Like it's just a given that he'll be solid and be quick but we aren't really imagining his impact. I'm looking forward to the moment when we're all like oh poo! this guy just tore through an entire defense for a long TD like it was nothing.

We're gonna embarrass some teams this year and it'll be sweet, sweet revenge for last year.

Who's knocking him for his hands? The kid never dropped a ball last year and had 74 targets.  Wtf? Route running could use polishing but it's at least average.

Lmao Desean is better than any WR on our roster. Another delusional pff writer

Pro football outsiders actually did a little breakdown how badly Kirk Cousins underused Jackson.

Just go find another team to cheer for already....your poo is way past old.

He also has multiple 1000 yard seasons with multiple QB's

Still better than any WR in our roster

You really did completely miss the point of the twitter comments (not that you completely missing the obvious is a surprise).  He did NOT say even say that we had better WR's or weapons.  He said that the kind of guys we have are matchup nightmares.

Evans and Jackson are very good WR's....but all teams have good WR's and teams have CB's that are used to covering good WR's.  He was not saying that the Bucs did not have excellent talent at the WR and TE position....but they are your basic WR and TE players.  Teams are ready to cover and defend them.

His point was (and a valid one) that CMC and Samuel will cause problems because you can run so many different schemes out of the same personnel group.  You have zero idea who will be in the backfield and who will be in the slot.  Thus, they are able to expose those matchups.  Either CMC or Samuel will likely get matched up against a LB many times...a huge matchup issue.  Try and cover them with a S and Olsen is left being covered by a LB.

Again....he said nothing about talent at the WR position.  He was talking about matchups and versatility.

At least TRY and keep up....if not, just move along already.

Nope I read the part where he said Desean can juts run really fast. PFF is full of brainless idiots and mouth breathers who fall in their every words like you.

You really think Mccaffrey and Samuel are some on-coverable weapons the NFL have never seen? LOL. You put a average DB on either on them, jam them up and they are done, their rookies with no experience. Match up nightmare is what Tampa surrounded Jamies with, one of the best deep threats in the NFL with a 6'5 monster who catches everything, the perfect balance

An interesting twitter debate took place recently concerning the Panthers VS The Buccaneers Offense. A guy from PFF is standing firm in his belief that the Panthers have had the superior draft in comparison to the Buccaneers and will field a superior offense.

Take a look:

"The matchup potential of this Carolina #Panthers offensive personnel is just incredible. #NFL teams just don't have the defensive personnel to go one on one with them. Teams with a defensive matchup weapon at all tend to only have one of them, and the Panthers now have three guys to cover. Oh, and their QB is some guy called Cam Newton, who poses his own matchup problems... So excited for its potential."

A very good argument. Even so, I'd add on how overrated DeSean Jackson has been. He's a fast WR who doesn't scare many. He's also getting up there in age, and he's really only a one-trick pony.

The Panthers may as well truly have the better offense to the Buccaneers.

Potential unrealized is still just potential. Hopefully, Shula can unlock it.

Let him keep thinking this is Madden.
