PFF Samuel Monson: Panthers Offense Is The One To Watch Out For, Not The Bucs

An interesting twitter debate took place recently concerning the Panthers VS The Buccaneers Offense. A guy from PFF is standing firm in his belief that the Panthers have had the superior draft in comparison to the Buccaneers and will field a superior offense.

Take a look:

"The matchup potential of this Carolina #Panthers offensive personnel is just incredible. #NFL teams just don't have the defensive personnel to go one on one with them. Teams with a defensive matchup weapon at all tend to only have one of them, and the Panthers now have three guys to cover. Oh, and their QB is some guy called Cam Newton, who poses his own matchup problems... So excited for its potential."

A very good argument. Even so, I'd add on how overrated DeSean Jackson has been. He's a fast WR who doesn't scare many. He's also getting up there in age, and he's really only a one-trick pony.

The Panthers may as well truly have the better offense to the Buccaneers.

Of course they will.  Jameis isn't in the same stratosphere as Cam as a physical specimen or QB.

People keep looking at the draft as what will determine our success in 2017. But that will undeservedly get the credit.

Our success 100% is dependent upon the health of our offensive line.

I have been saying this since before the end of the season and I'll get no credit for it come the end of this next season. But that doesn't make it any less true

That's always a given. Luckily, we have a projected starter level player at every position with adequate depth of at least one player if all goes well.

Only question revolves around LT, and that's whether Kalil meets expectations and if Oher comes back healthy. Every other spot is set and ready.

DeSean isn't overrated. IMO not worth what they're paying him, but he's a very solid WR with more than just straight line speed. Howard is a rookie TE who has all kinds of ridiculous upside and showed a bit in college but didn't have a huge role. Hard to project really how great he'll be in the pros, and there will be an adjustment. Guys like Hunter Henry being great their rookie year at TE are not the norm. Eric Ebron is just now coming into his own and he was a much better prospect than Howard. I really like Howard and am pissed the Bucs got him where they did but I'm not scared of him this year or even next year. We defend TEs well and he's got a big curve ahead of him the next few years. Evans obviously is great, but he struggles with drops and I trust Bradberry against him. Outside of that, Jameis isn't great yet. Does some good things but a lot of bad things. No real running game (and yes I remember Rodgers running all over us in the game Cam was out) either. Not worried much at all about their O, or their D for that matter.

 

As for us, I'm optimistic about McC and Samuel but I'm not just going to assume that we're going to be a dominant offense because of them. They're both rookies with curves as well and while they are both very versatile and provide matchup problems, that also makes their transition harder as they need to learn different roles than just one position. Excited as hell to see them but like I said, not assuming they're going to make a huge impact right from day 1. Still a lot to be seen before we should get overly excited about our offense. Our D on the other hand I think will be dominant. And our O certainly has the potential if McC and Samuel prove to be what we hope they are, and if Kalil works out and RT becomes stable whether it be Oher, Williams or even Moton. KB and Funch both are mysteries too. Ones that could turn out extremely well. I could see either a repeat of last year on offense (less likely) or a true #1 offense (not one where the points were somewhat inflated by our defensive takeaways), and anything in between. Cam, WRs, rookies, both tackle spots are all huge question marks. Any could turn out very well or very bad.

With the Bucs it all comes down to Jameis. You couldn't ask for a better 1 and 2 receiver in Evans and Jackson. Howard is a good prospect but people forget how solid Brate was last season. I give the nod to us due to Cam and our running game but it's close. I agree that our Oline will be our X-factor. Every offense in our division has potential to be elite.

Norman turned Evans into a blubbering baby. I think Bradberry can handle him at this point.

Samuel is gonna go off at some point this season. He is getting knocked for hands and route running, but I think that's all bs. Come game day he is gonna be nasty. I envision a stretch of several games where he is just on fire.

Also, CMC is kinda ignored. Like it's just a given that he'll be solid and be quick but we aren't really imagining his impact. I'm looking forward to the moment when we're all like oh poo! this guy just tore through an entire defense for a long TD like it was nothing.

We're gonna embarrass some teams this year and it'll be sweet, sweet revenge for last year.

To be honest, I think you have been unduly harsh towards Funchess this offseason.  Has he lived up to what we want thus far? Obviously not.  But he has shown the ability to get open (he's not targeted much, though, so it has often gone unnoticed), and he can make the big catch.  The flip side is that he also has dropped some balls that he absolutely needs to catch, and I don't get the sense that he has earned Cam's trust yet.  Generally, he's too inconsistent, and certainly needs to tighten up some things.  But I don't think it's fair or just to say he's shown nothing.  IMO, I think he's a guy that needed a year or two on the bench to develop instead of being thrust into a key role out of the box.

Bottom line, I get being disappointed and wanting more out of him, but he has shown signs that he can be good if he continues to develop and becomes more consistent.  Will he do that?  Who knows, and that's why we can't count on it.  It's also why I think this year is pivotal for him.  Either he steps up, or he'll be relegated to our #5 non-dressing receiver at best.

The amazing level of love for OJ Howard is crazy round here.  He's good but we already have a better TE than him now.  Enough.  And I am least worried about the Bucs in our division.  Fug them.

Agree with Woodie we need to give Funchess more time. He's been average but needs some targets this year.

He also has multiple 1000 yard seasons with multiple QB's
