That's ok, they can say that all they want. I've said for a while that McCaffrey was the pick and that they might take fournette over McCaffrey but it wasn't cut and dry between the two.

Quite a few in the front office including a few that had a huge say in the board favored McCaffrey.

I love McCaffrey. I never expected us to draft him. I take that back... I didn't want us to draft him. Not because he's not a great talent, but because I don't trust Shula. That's another story however.

Keep in mind, we were seeking to draft Mark Barron over Luke at one time. He got picked ahead of us. It worked out for us. Who knows? Maybe this is history repeating itself.

I believe he was a target based on what I read and what I heard prior to the draft, but no arguments on hoping he has a Luke type impact on Offense.

Was listening to sports radio on my drive home from work and Omar Gaither brought up a good point. I know some say this is a lazy comparison but if RUNCMC turns out to be Darren Sproles, is Sproles 2.0 worth an 8th overall pick?

I haven't thought of it that way and Sproles has had a very good career in this league but would he have been worth an 8th overall?

Time will tell I suppose and he very well could be a totally different type of player. I admittedly didn't watch many Stanford games. I think it was a good pick but it had me thinking. Worth a discussion for those with an open mind.

I can assure you McCaffrey is a VERY different player from Sproles. Le'Veon Bell patience with LeSean McCoy's running style and Gore's intelligence. Closest true NFL comparison is Brian Westbrook, but even that may just be capping on the potential McCaffrey brings.

Even the sites owner wrote a whole column about how Fournette is clearly the better player.  Just stop dude.

Better is subjective here. It clearly comes down to what you value. They are different types of players. If you want power then Leonard is your guy. If you want quickness and massive versatility then CM. I believe this whole evolve thing gives a huge hint about what we were wanting to do in the draft. We couldn't evolve much with Leonard. He would likely be just a more dominant version of Jonathan Stewart in our offense. CMAC changes our entire offense. He opens it up and makes it more difficult to game plan against us. Add in Samuel and then look at how much more versatile, dangerous and harder to stop our offense is likely to be versus Fournette as the RV.

Let's just take RR words as true..."we need to evolve the offense". Do you really think Fournette evolves the offense.  He is just a faster clone of Steward.  This was RR/shula call all along.  If it succeeds, he gets a third contract, if not......see ya.

He was a better choice than any of the  backs taken in the 2005 draft at picks higher than 8.

Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams, Cedric Benson.. ..better than WR Troy Williamson.

The logic of that argument doesn't make much sense. Any of those teams would have rather taken Sproles in retrospect.

Find me an example that we smokescreen.
We never hide who we like, especially in the first round.
And while we're at it... who the hell was gonna draft McCaffrey earlier than us??? Come on, man.

I've got nothing...I said "if you say so", but wasn't being 100% serious because I don't know. Gettleman is pretty open for a GM and seems to speak his mind for the most part. You very well could be right.

I can't complain about that. Christian has nasty agility, smooth routes and great hands. That's not even taking his IQ into account.

I'm just glad we chose McCaffrey over Howard. That guy just has bust/disappointment written all over him.

Believe it or not, I'm pretty glad TB took Howard. Won't be a threat at all his rookie season, and who knows if he ever will.

If McCaffrey were the target, we wouldn't have waited 2 minutes to make the pick.

We didn't.

Only one team stands in Carolina’s way. The Los Angeles Chargers hold the seventh overall pick.

Gettleman immediately turns to the scouts: “What do the Chargers need?”

“Wide receivers,” he’s told. “Maybe the safety, Malik Hooker.”

Before the draft began, rumors circulated that the Chargers were very interested in McCaffrey. This, coupled with how close the Panthers are to being on the clock, creates tension and silence in the room.

The Chargers submit their pick. It’s Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams.

Before he can even breathe a sigh of relief, Gettleman tells the room, “We’re going to go with McCaffrey.”

The decision was made before their pick even came up and was called as soon as we were on the clock.  The only thing that occurred during the wait was a phone call to talk to him.

Quote

The phone rings. Gettleman’s executive administrator tells the room a team is interested in acquiring Carolina’s pick. She is quickly instructed to tell them there will be no trade.

Instead, the Panthers place a call of their own. Rivera and Shula make their way to a side office to chat with the newest Panther, who is watching the draft with his family in Colorado.

“Did we get Christian on the phone? He’s alive? Turn it in,” Gettleman says.

Was Westbrook worth an 8th overall pick? Granted he probably had a better career than Sproles. If you can assure that than great, but not sure how you can say that with 100% confidence. Hope it works out because Westbrook is one of my favorite players. I think CMC will do good things here regardless. Just thought Omar's reasoning behind him being the 8th pick was solid even though I don't agree with him all the time.
