On the Panthers defense

Damn Dirty Sanchez. Dave's WTF of 2016 draft.

I'm not sold on Worley at all. And Adams is old as dirt with nothing proven behind him. If you thought Harper was a grey beard.... .Add old DE I'm not sold its fixed yet. One wonders how much different 2016 could have been with Norman and Harper.

Let's hope Pep truly is in his early 30s form, that plus the DT rotations could cover some sins in the back end again.

Peppers isn't your average old DE, come on now don't throw him in that category. The man amassed 7.5 sacks as an OLB last year.

I am stoked about this defense.  Coleman and Adams are going to solidify our safeties with only a concern about depth.  Worley and Bradberry were drafted for this defense and 2016 was some serious growing pains but they played solid down the stretch.  Once again depth is a concern.

I think the DE position is going to be awesome as a unit.  We might have 2 or 3 DEs with 6-7 sacks each instead of one having 10 or 15.   Basically the whole Dline has good starters and above average backups.

Linebackers are arguably the best unit in football.  Our depth took a hit with the loss of Klein but Mayo has the talent to fill a great backup role.

Wilks taking over is a huge bonus for us.  He knows the players and has a good aggressive mind.  Adding the veterans of Pep. Adams and Munnerlyn is only going to help.

Our offense is going to look different and should put up more than enough points to give this defense a chance to win the majority of our  games.

It's fairly easy to convince ourselves of the bad, but it is equally important to acknowledge the good.

Mike Adams, for example, while 38, is also a Pro Bowler and is not Tre Boston.

We went to SB50 with Jared Allen and Roman Harper, so old heads can get it done.

I was a huge critic of Worley last season, on both defense and ST. He started to look a lot more comfortable towards the end, and I imagine a more aggressive scheme will also go a long way in helping him.

I'd certainly hope they'd start out on a higher level.  Brian Hoyer and Tyrod Taylor on tap?  I mean gimme a break.

I wasn't necessarily referring to the opponent, just to the defense itself.  A year of experience for Bradberry and Worley while adding Munnerlyn/Peppers/ and the safety whose name escapes me should put us in far better position than we were to begin last season.  I am glad we are playing against weak qb's but the first two qb's we faced last year did not exactly light it up.

Jesus Christ, some of you are acting like such hand wringing bitches! We've got an aggressive DC. We've got a bunch of talented, rising young players at multiple positions, and in positions where we're lacking young guys, we've got older, perennial all pro guys. We'll have another draft to replace the old guys next offseason.

I'll never understand why people want to be so doom and gloom before a team has even hit the practice field. This is more likely than not going to be an awesome season for us.

So much talk about the Panthers "evolved" offense, not much talk about the new Wilks defense that could be even more exciting to see. When I asked Jeremy Cash if the new defense will be more aggressive his eyes lit up and he didn't hesitate to answer in the affirmative.

Last year to start the season there was a nightmare scenario on the defense.

- Rookie corners

- Nickel not fully recovered from injury. Adequate replacement (Leonard Johnson) would not come for weeks. Don't get me started on Zack Sanchez.

- Ineffective defensive end play (to put it nicely)

- One pro caliber starting safety not playing his typical position.

All this adds up to a perfect storm of suckage, The only saving grace was excellent play from Star, Luke, and Thomas. If any of those guys were not playing at a high level the defense would have been historically bad.

Fast forward to this year

- Corners no longer rookies. Both looked solid late last season.

- Captain Munnerlyn at nickel. Corn Elder his backup. Sanchez likely gone.

- Peppers is back. Mario Addison will see increased time. Deshaun Hall to spell the starters.

- Two pro caliber starting safeties! Yeah!!

Looky there, all of the biggest issues look like they could be fixed.

Throw in Steve Wilks who is chomping at the bit to let the guys get aggressive again with less fear of the long back breaking play, and what you have there my friends is the potential to be the top defense in the league.

Adams is 36.

Some of you need to go to youtube and take a look at some Peppers highlights from the last couple of years. That guy can still play and he can still return an INT like a DB. He is truly a freak of an athlete and, in my opinion, his best position is DE, not LBer. Granted, he may not be able to play every snap and ST's anymore, but he will most definitely contribute.

i wish we had a veteran at outside corner with more thane one year of experience.

and then what if Bradberry or Worley are injured?i assume that we would more than likely move Captain to the outside...meh.like i said beford we need more depth than that to avoid hiring someone thats sitting on their couch like we had to do in 2015.
