Luke Kuechly: RB Christian McCaffrey Is "Going To Be A Challenge" Come Training Camp

Someone's not looking forward to facing Christian McCaffrey.

And it's not someone from another team.

When asked about Christian McCaffrey, Luke Kuechly offered a bunch of glowing remarks. Laughing and agreeing with the comparison of himself to McCaffrey, he admits McCaffrey has some good DNA. But one thing Luke's sure of; his hands are gonna be full at Training Camp.

After hearing the rave reviews from rookie minicamp, Kuechly knows he’ll have his hands full when the one-on-one drills begin and he gets matched up with No. 22.

“He’s going to be a challenge,” Kuechly said. “Hopefully they just let him run one simple route so I know what’s coming.”

Knowing what’s coming and where it’s coming from is half the battle against a versatile playmaker like McCaffrey. It’s a challenge Kuechly is looking forward to on the practice field. Then on game days, he’s glad McCaffrey will become the opposition’s problem.

“I sat down and watched some highlights, and yeah, he’s pretty doggone good,” Kuechly said. “He’s quick, he can run away from people, he can do a lot of different things.

“You have to identify where he is. The formation will somewhat dictate what he can do. He’ll be one of those guys – and I don’t want to put him in a box or anything – but kind of like Darren Sproles. Wherever he is, you better figure it out. Anywhere he gets the ball, he can score. I think Christian can bring that to us.”

Get the ball to McCaffrey, and he'll score according to Luke.

Some high praise from one of the best defenders in the NFL.

On the one hand, I like hearing the praise from Luke.

On the other, I think "he's got to say that... he's got to be positive"... what's he gonna say?  "on tape, he looks like a guy I could lay the wood on"?

On my 3rd hand... I think... we had better not have paid 1.8 for Darren Sproles.

My thoughts exactly.

Think more Brian Westbrook in terms of realistic expectations, with LeSean McCoy mixed in his running style with Le'Veon Bell's patience and vision.

If you want to go as far as Gettleman did and call him a HoF caliber player, well then Curtis Martin is more your forte.

“The best tackle-box runner I’ve ever seen is Curtis Martin out of Pitt. Christian is right there with him. Running in that tackle box takes unique vision and unique quickness, and he’s got it. Curtis Martin had it, and he had a great career – a Hall of Fame career – and this kid’s got those kind of skills.”

Come on... you don't have a third hand...

Or do you?

Nah, later on they'll be saying, "that guy plays like a poor man's McCaffrey". "Never seen anything like that running back out of Stanford." "The Panthers stole the 2017 draft."

    • his height, size and arm will forever cause problems and limitations...that is what it is.  I think to a degree, the law of averages is just coming into play a bit with him.  So as he plays more and more, you just flat out get the decent days mixed in too.  Which is just going to happen.
    • Good point. He's definitely better in 10-15 yards. I think that's his biggest improvement. But he wasn't 3-10 +15, he was 3-7, with at least one drop (minor but still). And with multiple passes at 14 yards completed. This passing chart doesn't look like at By one, lol. He threw more "deep" passes than Mahomes (NOT comparing him to Mahomes in a skill way lol), or at least more beyind 10 yards.
    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
