PFF explains how versatile we really can be now with CMC and Samuel

Recommended Posts

Yeah... 88 on the left vs a safety, KB, Funch and Samuel on the right taking all the corners up and CMC coming out of the backfield against a LB is pretty intriguing.  Cam should have about 10 different options available with that assuming the O line gives him time.

You hit the nail on the head.....the issue with the offense last year was OL, and the offense can be ridiculous this year IF the OL can get it done.

I think the biggest factor will be who will be the first and second read in the offensive plays. Usually it was KB / Olsen as the first and second read. We didn't have time for a 3rd or 4th read last year.

For us to be truly effective especially early in the season I think CMC must be 1st or 2nd read in the offense. This will make defenses focus more on him and will open the offense up for Olsen, KB, Samuels/Funch.

Last year it seemed like KB was the first read and couldn't get separation so the next guy was Olsen. KB recovering from ACL made it easy for defenses to cover our first read. Zone defenses were particularly effective against us because it takes big guys longer to get into the holes in zone defenses.

Having 2 speedy guys (Samuels/CMC) will create issues for defenses to use zone or we can dink and dunk our way down the field. Using man to man will create issues bc CMC against a linebacker is a mismatch.

The whole point of brining in these playmakers is to make it easier on the O-line by getting the ball out of Cam's hands a little quicker though. Cam is going to have to learn to dink and dunk a little bit more.

It definitely goes both ways...  having quick playmakers makes the Defense concerned about quick passes... the O line giving Cam time to find guys down field puts pressure on their D backs... doing both keeps defenses confused.

Well the Oline should be helped out a bit...with a better short passing game.

This is true, and in turn defenses will have to commit more defenders to cover the shallower routes implemented which also limits the available blitzers for defenses to let loose regularly.

Shula drove me insane with this last year.

The OL is complete poo yet we design and call plays that take a long time to develop.

If the OL is complete poo you got to design and call plays that have the ball out in 2-3 seconds.

If Shula can't do common sense things, why people question those that are skeptical of what he can do with CMC and Samuel?

Truthfully the problem with Shula is he doesn't know how to adjust. Whatever he has planned, he's going to stick with until the season is over. If we get exposed, the adjustments will be minimal. We need to go to a faster paced offense and let Cam adjust to what he see.

What players did we have last year that we could get the ball out out in 2-3 seconds, without the opposing team being draped all over that receiver? ginn? With those hands? We were a SLOW team, our receivers were literally the worst in the league about getting separation. We just got quick and fast af with our two first picks. This theoretically should work.

    • Bryce put it in a spot only his guy could get it only for David Moore to drop it. T_T Tremble and Horn both struggled yesterday and that killed me since they're two of my favourite players. Tommy knows he has to come down with this one. Folks were understandably saying that JT would've caught that had he not gotten hurt a few plays earlier. The more I look at this play, the more I think that Bryce made the right decision throwing it out the back of the endzone. He could have tried to laser it in to Thielen, but that safety is lurking awfully close inside. Insuring the field goal here after a 44sec drive to end the half was the right move.
    • Except Bryce was the main reason we were in it
    • NFL Pro has the All-22 up already 😄 Going to grab a play or two from each redzone series to put screenshots to. Looks like AT angled his route off to the near pylon rather than the back corner where Bryce was throwing to. I imagine this is something they'll quickly try to figure out with Thielen back from IR. After watching the All-22 again, this was actually a pretty nifty play. I thought it was a TE screen to Tremble because of the way XL charged the DB, but he quickly shed and kept upfield as seen in the second screenshot. This looks like it had multiple layers built into it with AT running the crosser, XL the fade, Tremble to the flat. The progression would call for the play to go to Chuba here as the LB does follow Tremble out into the flat. Ball hits Chuba low and in the hands, but the LB does a good job disrupting the catch.
