Good for him, he had a shot oa our job but we hired someone else so can't blame him. I honestly feel better not having a GM in waiting, when we need a new GM I was the best candidate availble not some incumbent based on loyalty.

People forget how awful Ron was early on. Hell he still has lapses back to that guy

No one has forgotten anything about Ron.  I'll give a bit of leeway to a 1st time head coach over a 10 year GM.

Ron isn't blameless but to excuse Hurney and his full retard ways is just ridiculous.

I'm not positive they'll replace Beane. From what I've read, the promotion to Assistant GM was an enticement to stay more so than any need felt to actually have someone in that role.

If they do decide to hire another guy for that spot, I'd expect an internal promotion like Don Gregory and then someone else backfilling his old spot (Jeff Morrow maybe).

One name to think about if they do look outside though: Jimmy Raye III.

Raye was recently let go from the Colts, but prior to joining them he was Director of College Scouting for the Chargers for about six years. He hasn't worked with Gettleman, but he and Ron Rivera were colleagues in San Diego.

It'd be no shock if Rivera put in a good word for him to Gettleman. Heck, Raye had received GM consideration before and was highly thought of prior to hitching a ride on Ryan Grigson's fail  train.

For what it's worth, Raye was born in Fayetteville NC and spent part of his childhood there before his family moved to California. Brian Gutekunst was also born in the Carolinas (Raleigh) so maybe...nah.

Jeff Beathard is another inside guy I could see getting promoted (he's got the genes for it) though not as high as Assistant GM.

Doubt they fill it. He was promoted to keep him here as the replacement for Gettleman. Anyone who thinks he will fail doesn't understand how much control he had the last 3 drafts and with the teams draft board and scouting.

They let him run a large portion of the last few drafts for a reason after all.

I think it's possible if they want someone to continue doing whatever duties Beane had assumed.

But ultimately, I don't really think they replace him either.

I never said to excuse him of anything. I was on the fire hurney train, and he had his flaws, don't think he was cut out to be a gm. But as patient as JR is, I don't think Hurney gets fired at that time if Ron wasn't out there coaching not to lose instead of coaching to win. He would have eventually been gone and I'm glad we got it out of the way, but Ron was our biggest issue that year, not the roster.
