"Cam Newton Isn't Accurate." Is That Really True? A Quick Look At Why Shula Is To Blame, And The Offense

Our slow plodding WR's can't get separation.  So all the quick routes every one talks about aren't open as well as the deep routes.

Our Oline was garbage last year.

The only receiver who can get separation drops a lot of footballs.

And everyone acts like they didn't see Cam throw a lot of horrible passes last year.

But it's all Shula's fault...............................

OP,

The gif you used of the KB catch had the slot WR WIDE OPEN in the middle of the field between the zones.

Just watched the gif again, it also had the opposite side WR WIDE OPEN on his underneath crossing route.

Cam just made a poor read and forced a low % pass in double coverage. Not to mention it was a fly/go route which has to be one of the lowest % routes in the game.

People honestly buy this separation and cant get open crap?!?!?

Most teams play a lot of zone. So long as the WR can move ie run he can get in the soft spots of the zone.

Even in man, unless the defender has telepathic abilities he is always gonna be a second behind the WR when he cuts / breaks.

The defender has to wait and react to the WR.

Now the separation might not be big, but its enough when timed right with an accurate pass.

The problem isn't the players (mainly talking WRs here). Its the scheming and execution ie Shula and Cam.

The 'slot receiver' was Tolbert floating on the ten yard line in a 3rd and long. He wasn't an option. No idea who else you think is open on this play.

The WR right beside KB. He runs a deep post route which breaks in the middle of the field.

There is a huge window in the middle of the field when he makes his break/cut.

As for Tolbert, he had an easy 5-10 yards and more if the DB misses the tackle.

Tolbert actually should have ran a delayed skinny post in the middle that gets cleared out by the WR beside KB.

However, on a 3rd and long Cam needs to be looking for that deep post route first.

If you still are blind to the WR that was open on the deep post let me break it down in more detail for you.

When the WR reaches the 20-yard line and passes the two DB's and vears inside he is wide open.

27 is hoping Cam throws that across the middle. Thats a 30 yard pass. Anything less than a pure laser and its picked. Either way his receiver is going to get absolutely annihilated as 27 tees off on him from the bottom of the screen leading to an incompletion/injury. Earl Thomas was also playing that pass across the middle. The underneath receiver had both the corner and Chancellor praying to the heavens that he gets that dump off. Thats an injury or fumble waiting to happen.

Cam has laser.

You make an anticipation throw into that window. No way the DB could have picked that off if Cam throws it on time and with some mustard.

Now you are correct about the WR gonna get popped.

But that is part of the game.

The issue was 2nd and 3rd down passing to WRs.

2016

Player  Tgt  Rec  Ctch%  Yds  TD  1D
Kelvin Benjamin  73  35  47.9%   503  4  27
Ted Ginn  53  31  58.5%  459  3  17
Devin Funchess  35  14  40.0%  223  3  12
Corey Brown  36  17  47.2%  151  0  10
Brenton Bersin  6  2  33.3%  17  0  2

2015

Player  Tgt  Rec  Ctch%  Yds  TD  1D
Ted Ginn  59   29  49.2%  540  9  26
Jerricho Cotchery  39   27  69.2%  363  1  20
Devin Funchess  38   17  44.7%  246  4  14
Corey Brown  33   16  48.5%  221  2  13
Brenton Bersin  4   2  50.0%  23  0  1

The Ginn/Cotchery combo was much more effective than the Benjamin/Ginn combo, and the offense leaned on the Benjamin/Ginn combo a lot more than the Ginn/Cotchery combo to keep drives alive. Both Benjamin and Ginn failed to establish themselves as well as Cotchery on 2nd and 3rd down from the slot.

Benjamin as the #1 and Ginn as the #2 was the problem. While Cotchery was not the greatest, he was reliable enough to keep drives alive and minimize the chances of the defense making a play. Ginn was also more effective as a #1 big play threat in 2015 than Benjamin was in 2016.

Making one big giant excuse for Cam. He makes the final play call. He makes the reads and decided where to go with the football.

2015 was a year the defense made the offense look better than it was. It's time to move on.

Post less.

In fairness, Cam's best throws have always been 10-15 yards downfield.

Shula makes those throws the focal point of the pass attack.

Decent OL play and the ability to run would solve more issues than replacing Shula IMO (and that isn't Shula praise)

Seems like DG looked at the same info and has tried to address this in the offseason.  Khalil and Moton on the OL.  Samuel and CMC for separation.

Cam needs another 1/2 second and his receivers need another 1/2 step.  This can equate to 10-15% completion percentage if they don't Ginn up the fugging catch

Great article @Saca312 but I wouldn't put all the blame on Shula. IIRC, he has designed this offense to fit Cam and the players that were brought in. I've always thought that a good coach molds to the players and not into his "system". I don't believe Shula used RPO significantly before teaming up with Cam.

That tells me that Shula should be able to adapt to using CMC and Samuel. Not saying he will or that he's blameless but that he's shown that he can adapt...scheme wise.

Really...Do you not recall the head hunting and neglect from officials on him the entire year last year?
