to be honest the whole city sucks pretty bad unless you're a bro douche or corporate pig

Charlotte used to be a cool place with actual arts and culture but all the cool places have been bought out, demolished and redeveloped with ugly offices, ugly apartments, and stupid nightlife venues. There used to be some really awesome places I loved to spend my time at. Now there are very, very few left.

This is true. All the good places are being taken away. NoDa still has some good places to check out

Charlotte is dope. Maybe I'm one of those "bro douches," but I like hanging out in uptown when I'm home. Thing is I also appreciate culture and arts and do agree that Charlotte could have done a better job of keeping historic buildings and protecting some of the more iconic joints in the city, etc. Growth isn't a bad thing though.

Bro, don't even let me catch you around epicenter after bad mouthing my stomping grounds like that.   After I'm done doing a few lines and raping the poo out of these el-bees over at Gold's Gym, I'll be ready to take someone's ass to pound-town.

Further from Downtown I've been going to this Italian place called Fiamma a lot in Dilworth. Super super tasty. Best Italian I've ever had, Osso Bucco was amazing. The noodles are homemade and truly taste like it. Silky but still have a goood bite to them.

There's nothing to do in Charlotte and someday I will take my vengeance on the person that shut down The Penguin.

Do you ever bring anything of worth to threads anymore, or have you just gone full shiit post? Life got you down?

King's Kitchen is great for upscale southern food. Mert's has great BBQ beef ribs.

Futo Buta is pretty good for ramen in South End.

King's Kitchen and Mert's are MUST hits on your visit.

Mert's has fantastic soul food and is a favorite of many Panthers players....you will see them in there all the time.

King's Kitchen is a great restaurant and serves a great cause.  The food is fantastic (their pan fried chicken is outstanding).  The guy that runs it has it as a non-profit.  All profit goes to the homeless shelter and charities.  In addition, most of the people working there are either homeless or transitioning.  The owner is giving them a great opportunity to get a fresh start and build a better life.  Make sure you hit it up.....and drop a BIG tip for the wait staff.  They do a fantastic job and the money is definitely going to someone who can use it.

There are plenty of places in Charlotte with manufactured kitsch that serve greasy burgers and fried pickles. The Penguin wasn't that great to begin with.

Since you said down town, I'm only going to recommend stuff within walking distance. Plenty of others are recommending things requiring a drive or an uber.

I agree with the other posters on King's Kitchen. The best southern food in town in my experience, and a great cause to support. I'd choose it over Mert's, but that's another good choice.

Fahrenheit at the top of the Hyatt Hotel has an amazing view and the food has been really good whenever I've eaten there. It's about the same price as a typical steakhouse.

Essex. Great small plate restaurant with really well made, strong, craft cocktails.

Room 112. Great sushi, Japanese and Chinese food.

Futo Buta is a few blocks out of downtown, but if you're staying on the south end of college, then it'd be a short walk down the light rail trail. Great ramen.

Sea Level - Raw bar and seafood restaurant. Cool atmosphere, solid craft beer selection, fresh seafood. On 5th street between Tryon and College.

Definitely hit up a brewery if you're into that sort of thing.  An uber ride from downtown to anyone of the breweries shouldn't be too bad.  Most of them have food and lively atmospheres where I'm sure you'll have no trouble talking to someone.  A lot of them are centered around the same area with a quick walk between them.

I was going to list them all, but someone already did that: http://www.charlottesgotalot.com/breweries

To All:

Thank you! This is awesome. I came here for help and have received great responses!

I am staying at the Holiday Inn so super close to some of these places. So far can't complain about the downtown scene. Of course, I spent all day in corporate training and this is my second night "out".

Def plan on hitting up Mert. And some of these others listed.

I have been a Panthers fan since they formed a team. Originally from Philly area. Moved to Wilmington 6 years ago and never had a chance to get to Charlotte so this is so freaking cool for me to experience as a major Panthers fan.
