He's stupid for not coming here because we will be back in the playoffs. Some people got to chase the cash though.

It's not like Barnidge is a guy who has made tens of millions in his career. I don't blame him for chasing the $$$ if that's what he does.

Jax=Starter as #1 TE

Buffalo=opportunity to compete for starting gig

Carolina=#2 TE, possible ring

I think we have to sell the role he will play.  Showcase him more as a receiving TE than before.

NOTE: Signing Barnidge could impact who we keep at WR as well.....IMO, we have 2 areas that seem weak--#2 TE and #2 FS.

Should've never cut him to begin with

We didn't cut him.

Also, at the time- there was a single person on this forum begging to re-sign him. Not one.

Everyone was looking to find a #2 TE to take Shockey's place as he retired.

somehow we didn't use him right when he was here... would that change if he comes in for Dickson?

Different situations bro. Fox and crew treated TE's like they were the bubonic plague and he only had one year under Rivera and was behind two pro-bowlers. The way we use the position now is way different than the way we used it the majority of his career here, hence 3 x 1000 yard seasons.

  •         Gary Barnidge signed a three year, $12.1 million contract extension with the Browns on December 11, 2015. Barnidge received a $3.25 million signing bonus

  •         Barnidge made approximately $1.5 m in 2016 (not including the signing bonus)

  •         So the Panthers can probably get Barnidge for $3m per year.

  •          Cutting TE Ed Dickson would create $2m in cap room.

  •         Cutting CAP would save $600k—as it appears now, he stands little chance of making the roster.

IF my assumption is correct and we sign Barnidge for $3m per season, we would upgrade the TE spot with a solid #2 veteran in his prime at a net cost of $500k per season.  If I am DG, I offer a $3m bonus and $2m per season for 3 seasons. That is a second bonus for GB and a base salary raise.

What about the SALARY CAP, you ask?:  (Note: This is not my area of expertise, but this is how i read it.  My expertise areas, should you ever need me, are toenail fungus and TV pop stars of 1970s sit coms)

  •          Based on this information, the Panthers are expected to have cap space of about $7m after the draft picks are signed http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/cap/

    ·
  •       DG usually keeps $4m or so for signing free agents during the season.

  • ·         We would like to keep some $ to roll over to sign some big contracts next season; we would probably like to add FS depth.

Jax is my guess. Good money and starter gig.

He signs with us he would probably get 30 targets a year here and his receiving yards would go way down and everyone here would be complaining again about us needing a 2nd TE.

If he has an agent that lets him sign a deal for 3 million then his agent needs to be :

Shot

Burned

Rushed to the emergency room given years of corrective surgery and therapy

Then shot again....

Look at average tight end salaries and tell me Barnige is a 3 million dollar tight end.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/tight-end/

Jack Doyle averages 6.5 mill per year.

His deal "should" be somewhere between Marcellus Bennet and bare minimum Jared Cook.

Can the deal be done?  Sure.  Can it be done easily for 3 mill???????  No #$#$#$##$ way!!

It's not like he is coming off years of being over paid and trying to go for the ring,  hell he wasted 4 of his career here the first time.
