Trouble at WFNZ: QCB and Mark Yarbro fired, full-length podcasts eliminated

Seems to a large part of the change over. I don't listen as much anymore now that I'm in the triangle area for school, but I started listening around 2007 and back then there were probably more on air guys that were fans of other teams (QCB, Mark Packer, Yarbs, etc) come to mind. Now it seems they are really making sure they have guys on there who root for the home team (Mac, Frank, Kroegs all being Panthers fans). Another reason for the change seems to be just business and trimming the fat. They effectively reduced from 4 shows to 3 and cut lots of their roster.

I don't know who u pull for in college, but FNZ is an anti-UNC Station. They won't admit it but I had someone who works there tell me this, as if unc fans couldn't pick up on it lol.

They are now affiliated with WBT radio (home of unc athletics) so it will be interesting to see if they tone down the hate towards Carolina. Prob not.

I had no issue with Yarbs. At least he had some sports knowledge.

The biggest deficiencies FNZ has are it's on air personalities lacking knowledge and cheering for out of market teams.

My problem with Yarbro was this: All he could bring to the table were those dreaded list shows.  Every topic he would introduce was a "Who was the best..." or "What was your favorite game..."  or "Who was your most hated player...".  Those kind of shows get callers sure, but he would do it during a time period like we are in now when the NBA playoffs, MLB reg season, NFL draft, NHL playoffs, and NASCAR are in full swing.  That is just ridiculous to do in my opinion.  A trained monkey can run that type of show.  Save that garbage for mid-July when there isn't anything else going on.  I want a host that will talk about the Panthers, Hornets, and relevant national topics intelligently and i don't mind a little homerism in a market like Charlotte.  Our stadiums get overran with opposing fans and our local radio used to as well.  I want guys that will talk about our f**king teams.  I literally and figuratively do not give a flying sh*t about the Cowboys, Giants, Bills, Steelers, etc. and i certainly don't give a flying sh*t about the opinions of their fans.  Keep it local. Keep it Panthers/Hornets/Hurricanes/ACC/SEC.

Kroegs is the man, he's the best thing going for WFNZ.

I actually kinda like Mac too, just because of his passion for the Panthers.

Can't stand Frank Garcia though, that guy is such an ass. For many reasons. And honestly Yarbs = meh I know he's been there for awhile, but one less old Redskin fan the better. He's really not that good either. QCB can be funny, I like him in doses. Wasn't big on when they moved him to The Call Up. Was he even on that show anymore with the host....ahhh... New England guy, he was pretty good actually and gave a good non-Panthers/Heels/Hornets bias.

Being out if market and the local Triad sports station dropping the WFNZ affiliation I can only listen via the WFNZ app. I enjoy it bc it's the only Panthers related radio I have...and I get to channel my inner @SCP while on the shi**er.

I liked Yarbs as the "background guy" on the Morning Sports Page back in the day, but I agree that he was "meh" as a co-host.  Some people are suited for certain roles, and he just didn't seem suited for that.  He and Garcia never seemed to click to me.  They would often talk over each other and generally didn't seem to get what the other was saying a lot of the time.  It constantly felt like Yarbs was having to explain himself in terms that Garcia could understand.  That was like night and day compared to how he meshed perfectly with Gary Williams and Celania on the Sports Page.

QCB was a little better at co-hosting because of his personality, but his shtick definitely worked better in the "3 with the QCB" role.  I don't think he ever had much of a future in a main hosting role.

As for the guys left, I do really like the Mac Attack even without Celania.  Also, Kroegs does a pretty good job with Primetime, although I'll be curious to see how the show is without QCB and Hitman in supporting roles.  I guess it's just going to be Kroegs and the co-host carrying the show every day, so we'll see how that goes.

Exactly.  All our teams are over two decades old at this point.  WAY past the point of catering to crap from other markets.

OMG I was saying this same very thing about Yarbs last week. It's draft week and the dude was doing list shows. I think he did it, like two days in a row.

Oh, and I felt like he was overly sensitive. It was so easy for Frank to rattle his cage.
