Being former military and still familiar with military issues, I know for a fact that the Air Force currently is experiencing a *critical* shortage in pilots and officers.

The service has to do what's best for the service over and above what's best for the football team.  Ideally, both would fit together fine.  Now is not one of those times (unfortunately for them).
