Can someone ease my mind on C. Samuel?

Love the Cobb comparison, and Samuel could even be better.

Here are comparable measurements....

Cobb-- 5'10, 191 lbs, 31 arm length, 9 3/8 hands, 4.46 40yd, 16 bench, 33.5 vert, 115 broad, 7.08 3 cone, 4.34 shuttle

the only thing Cobb beats him in is the 3 cone drill. Curtis beats Cobb in every other measurable, and is taller and 5 lbs bigger. They even have similar birthdays and were drafted at 20 yrs old each, cobb turned 21 in august of his rookie year, Samuel will be 21 in august.

Good post. I was hoping we would sign Cobb away from the Packers when he was a FA but I knew would probably couldn't afford him.

Samuel has better hands than Ginn and he's built more like a RB so he won't be tackled as easily. And best of all, he is very bright and is all about team. IMO, people get a little too caught up in the measurable and game tape sometimes and underestimate the value of intelligence and character. This guy is the kind of player that the Patriots have been drafting for years. He has the production, measurable and the intelligence. What more could you ask for?

I just watched every Curtis Samuel snap of the Ohio State Michigan game... They put the entire offense on this guy's shoulders. He does tend to body catch, but he also makes some pretty great catches away from his body as well. He obviously has the coordination to make acrobatic catches. He can track the ball running downfield. People just read the weaknesses on his NFL draft combine profile and didn't like what they read.

Because you brought up the Michigan game go watch again from 2:10 to the 3:00 mark.

At 2:10 you have Samuel fail to get out of his break and the play after you have the ball go right through his hands.

There are several more plays just like these once you get around to watching more of his games. Yeah he's fast, but damn are there ever some legit concerns with this kid as a WR we just spent a 2nd rounder on

He didn't fail to get out of his break he sat on his route while J.T. Barrett expected him to continue running. The biggest knock on him is catching balls out of his frame. He is 20 years old, the Panthers used one of their 30 visits on him, will work with Cotchery and Taylor.

Well, when he "failed to get out of his break," even the announcers said it looked like a miscommunication. Samuel looks like he made a conscious decision to sit. Barrett threw as if he was going to keep going. Let's say it is his fault, yea, he needs development on those routes. I think we plan to use him more as a gadget player running underneath and vertical routes, not 10 yard ins.

Yea, the one did go through his hands, but it was also high. Again, the announcers remark on how it sailed on Barrett. He was erratic the entire game. Ohio State fans will tell you how frustrated they could be with him.

I'm not saying he's perfect, but those aren't, "holy hell what is this guy doing" on either of these plays. No prospect is going to be perfect. Those were the two big miscues all game on his part, and I wouldn't even say they were entirely on him.

Yeah I shouldn't have said failed to get out of his break but he didn't finish his route. There's other plays like that one as well so it's a problem.

But yeah catching... his hands are god awful. That's the biggest concern and as we all know Cam throws them hot so typically someone with issues catching is going to have a tough time with Cam's missiles

Heres a terrible drop at 1:50 and he mis times his jump at 4:45 which leads to an INT.

Not the best throw at 4:45 but you can see Samuel mis timed his jump as well

He reminds me of Fozzy in the sense he is supposed to be this "big play" type guy but doesn't have a whole lot of big plays to show for it.

I can see why fans like the idea of him but there is a ton of work to be done here. Unless of course we're just planning on sticking everyone in the backfield and playing a game of hot potato all the way down the field

Playmakers. Every time they touch the ball or they are on the field they have to be accounted for. Which opens up opportunities for the entire offense.

We got two back to back for our offense.

What isn't there to like?

If some of you guys eased up on the guru bullshit trying too hard to sound like a general manager, and just looked at it from a complete perspective you wouldn't have to create these bitchfest threads every five minutes.

Then who should we have drafted at 40?

I agree with OP, could've traded down and still taken him 10 picks later. Same with McAffrey too. unfortunate.

Another asinine comment by an armchair GM who thinks he knows where other team's would draft a player.

Dude...just quit.

We wouldn't be in this predicament if we properly addressed this need in FA with say a DJax. You guys who keep going "oh well who should we have drafted" every year don't realize if this team would've drafted properly way back (Allen Robinson over Ealy) we wouldn't even need to reach for guys like Samuel.

Obvioulsy I hope the kid works out and becomes a great playmaker but from what I see I have my doubts. Just like I had my doubts with Funch and Ealy.
