Damiere Byrd

Benjamin
Samuel
Funchess (I'd give him this year to really push forward but he has to earn it)
Shepard (He brings more than what some realize, plus, it's a multi-year contract)

So, Byrd will have to beat out C. Johnson and Bersin, which could happen.  Or maybe we make some moves post-draft.
If you would have told me 2 seasons ago that the Vikes fantasy sleeper Johnson was going to be 4th-5th on our depth chart the night after the draft, then I would be excited about the offense's potential.

Agree wholeheartedly in these first 4 spots. And unless something changes, Joe Webb is going to get a spot as QB3/ WR6 so there is probably just one spot for those 3 guys for WR5.

Byrd has an uphill battle for sure, especially since McCaffrey is going to be our primary returner. I would honestly put his chances below Charles Johnson and on par with Bersin right now. I think the fact DG signed CJ before the draft means he saw something in him and he thinks he can contribute. Bersin isn't going to get you YAC or anything special, but he runs good routes, catches the ball, and can play ST. And Newton has a connection with him. Byrd has speed but that's the only advantage.

Drafting McCaffrey and Samuel minimize that advantage a lot.

Bersin is a perfect baseline end-of-roster/PS type.  Good measuring stick to have and you can play him if all goes to sh*t.

Yep, the more I think about the more I think Bersin is even ahead of Byrd given the guys we currently have.

Just don't see anyway he makes the roster. He might get picked up later in the season as a returner if a team needs one due to injury. Honestly that's the only way I see him playing this year. Really like him and hope I'm proven wrong.

I will have to say Shula will have options on how he attacks with McCaffrey, Samuel, and Cam. It also looks like we will be moving on from air Coryell to a more EP system. Contrary to the talking heads Cam can run any system and short quick passes will take out some of the dumb stuff the refs do to us.

I wouldn't say that necessarily.  Bersin is a PS guy.  Byrd can make the roster and will be a PS guy.  Though, Bersin is a good measuring stick if we're bringing in a FA or UDFA.  That aforementioned top-4 is a lock though in my view.

Charles Johnson is that 5th IMO.

I didn't think Byrd had a chance to make the team last year so I am not going against him again.   I will let this work its way out.

The receiving corps talent just increased two fold.  Also the addition of McCaffrey as a WR gives us flexibility to keep fewer WRs on the active roster.

Two players you can't count out until they make the cuts.  Bersin and Byrd.

I just feel byrd has not been given enough looks in a game with Cam. Why keep bringing him here. Benji should have not played as much once he twerked that knee again and byrd and funchess given more looks. Both guys looked good enough in training camp to earn more time with starters. WR and Rb evaluating is poor in making decisions as to who should be active and play on offensive side. Thats rivera being def.  minded coach

It will be fascinating to see what they do with the roster at WR.

New coach and new direction for the offense - going to make it harder to predict than usual.

In the end of season review, the coaches and front office clearly saw the lack of team speed on offense as a huge flaw and have worked to fix that via the draft.

If they could go back in time, it seems likely that they would have given Byrd more looks last year to add speed to the offense and to see what he's got.

I think Byrd's best shot to stick around is as a backup to Samuel.  As important as speed is to this offense, we can't just have one guy to take the top off of the defense.  So my guess is that one of Byrd/Johnson makes the roster - and Byrd might have an advantage, as he is much more similar to Samuel (from a backup perspective) than is Johnson.

My guesses:

Roster locks:  KB, Samuel, Funchess, Shepard

Funchess backs up KB.  Byrd might be viewed as the best backup for both Samuel and Shepard.  But its very possible CJ carves out his own role on offense as the speed flanker.

Byrd's got 4.2 speed.  Don't count him out.

Byrd was average in college from a production standpoint and not sure why folks expect any different at the pro level

He is a likable fellow but you're right. Byrd will have to fight tooth and nail just to get practice reps this year. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes in the first round of cuts.

Byrd was never part of the long-term plan. We took a flier on a UDFA who could run really fast but was never much of a football player. As expected, it's likely not gonna work out. No big deal.

He'll not only be competing against Samuel, but also CJ2. Virtually zero chance he makes the roster.
