Discussion: Carolina Panthers select WR Curtis Samuel

You wanted speed now they have speed..

With the 40th pick of the 2017 NFL draft, the Carolina Panthers select WR Curtis Samuel. In doing so, they instantly boost their offense. Samuel is the speedy receiver the Panthers desperately needed, running a 4.31 40 yard dash at the combine.
Info from NFL.com

STRENGTHS

Has crisp feet for sudden change of direction. Long-strider with deep speed to challenge press coverage over the top. Shows defender an exaggerated jab fake at top of his routes to generate lean from cornerback and create separation out of his break. On comeback routes, can stutter feet into his break for a sudden stop-and-open timing throws. Has explosiveness both vertically and out of his breaks to uncover on all three levels. Can ramp it back up to top gear quickly after tapping his brakes in space. At his best when matched up in open space. Gets faster and more dangerous as the play unfolds. Has two years of kick-return experience. Moveable matchup piece.

WEAKNESSES

Plays with some hip tightness that make his play more linear than fluid. Needs to work on release against press. Could get hung up off the line and into his routes by athletic, press-cover slot men. Has unnatural hands that fight the throw. Will default to body catches. Didn't have as many "pro-style" touches as teams would like. Averaged just 5.5 yards at the catch point, and several carries came on jet sweeps and stretch plays from shotgun. Average ball-tracking and adjustments to poor throws. Wasn't asked to handle blocking responsibilities very often.

DRAFT PROJECTION

 Round 2

SOURCES TELL US

"It's kind of like with Jalin Marshall last year. How do you use him? He's not a running back and his routes and hands really aren't that good. Marshall went undrafted. Samuel is a better athlete but they are about the same size and give you the same concerns with how to use them." -- East regional scout for AFC team

Regarding Samuel, I don't know much about him, but based on three different draft boards I looked at, he was probably the best wr prospect left.  While draft boards aren't always correct, I think most of us are ok with the pick.

One thing about it, we are going to be slightly smaller and much faster than last year on offense.

Samuels doesn't have a drop problem for the record. I know because I got lucky this year because a lot of the videos I watched on draft breakdown was of two players we actually ended up choosing. Samuel only has a drop rate 3.2%, he bobles some balls but doesn't drop them.

Anyway he's a real good break down I found done by some bolts fans

Why because I'm not sold on what Samuel brings?
Im guessing you haven't watch a single one of his games. I always give reasons as to why I don't like something. Blind faith isn't a valid reason to like a pick.
The Clemson game is easy to access go check that one out. Drops a ball over the middle and mis times a jump leading to an INT. He's going some real speed but I prefer a slot guy who is a crisp route runner

Nah, you just consistently have a stick up your bum hole is all

Really not a fan of drafting WRs in the 2nd that have questionable hands and route running.

You can get these smaller speed demons later in the draft with those question marks.

Hell I am not even sure if he is a WR or RB.

2nd round seems too high for this dude.

2nd round guys need to be fairly complete skill wise and be solid - good players on your team.

Is there anything you like about this draft, Mr. Arm Chair GM?
