I'm good with Gettleman's first round picks in general. I said it earlier this month that if there's anyone that knows about C-Mac, it's us. We probably have more intimate knowledge of his skills and potential than anyone thanks to hiring his college coach. This should be a heavenly match.

I can understand someone criticizing taking a RB in the first round or moves like drafting 3 corners in a row but being critical of a player like you know better than anyone else is pretty stupid.

Call me a YouTube scout or whatever you want. I think it was another wasted pick personally. We have drafted backup players two of the last 3 years. Shaq which the huddle applauded and Vernon butler and add in "change of pace" slash and here we are. I don't care if you watched his baby film. I see your roster and not landing a full on starter for atleast the duration of his rookie contract was dumb. Drink the gettle-kool-aid you want to. I think his connection to the coaching staff and "high character" played way to much into this pick.

 

Dont get me wrong kid is not a bad football player. I don't hate him as a prospect but at 8...our needs...stewie replacement...I would have much rather dropped a 2 and went and got Fournette.

Even if you woulde have rather drafted player X I don't see how's you can not logically accept this after Gettleman comments.  I was a bit meh on the pick but was neither disappointed or surprised.  Gettleman has a fairly good track record of reviewing film and analyzing talent.

Of Gettleman course he knows more than me. That's his job. I'm also not a executive chef but I can probably tell when you are over-simmering my paella.

Once the masturbatory haze dies down I think there are a few legitimate questions to ask about a top 10 pick. Top 10 picks are historically pretty hard to screw up (ignoring QBs). Some years I can throw a dart at McShay's big board or whatever and come out looking pretty good if not great.

First, is this a bunch of 2-3 round picks wrapped up in one or is he legit at each of these positions? If he didn't line up at slot or return punts where would he have been drafted. Is he an every down NFL back? Could he have been drafted as a pure WR? Honest question.

Second, are we designing a system around him or are we fitting him into the system we are designing for Cam? If he is that dynamic then hopefully we can build offensive schemes around him. Or is he a take the pressure off Cam guy. Because the latter isn't that exciting at #8. And screw the wildcat.

Is this a guy who is going to get 1200 yards from scrimmage or 600 or 300?

Is this a "he could be good if" guy? Or is he an immediate impact player.

Would we really be crying if we had taken Lattimore at #8

Either way, it's an exciting if not divisive pick. Love the fact that he apparently has amazing hands. Could we have traded back and gotten him? Don't care, I like when teams get what they want when it is their pick. I do trust Gettleman's talent evaluations. It;s just that I have questions maaannn...

He's going to give Cam a number of things he has been needing. Short passing game, screen pass game, slot receiver, a third down back that can block.

He's also going to probably extend J-Stew's viable career for two more years, allowing Stewart the chance to go back to the power run game that he excels at. In many ways, this brings Double Trouble back.

But not just that... he also gives us a speed receiver option on every down and a slot receiver option on every down. He's not as fast as Ginn (who is though?) but he has better hands and can take the routes through the flat. Honestly, if they are smart with him, he can very quickly be a player like Smitty in his early days (barring the Junkyard Dog attitude).

The kid also has a top end football IQ and that is something that has paid off for us very well. Smart players take to coaching and game plans well, and with his father having been a well-respected pro wide receiver, the pedigree plays into his future as he knows what to do and what is expected for a long-term career.

He is a bit on the small side, but he's still young, too. Adding another 10-15 pounds of muscle in the next two years isn't much of a stretch.
