Most secure career choices?

I'm in medical school but I don't recommend it to anyone that doesn't have an absolute burning desire to be a doctor. I could go on a rant about the negatives I've already seen with the profession but it boils down to this: being a physician is an isolating path.

If I had to go back and choose something different I would learn coding 100 percent. I took one coding class my second semester of my senior year in college and end up loving it. If you like math but more importantly logic coding is for you. It's beautiful how things work out. Now granted coding is a bit frustrating when you get stuck. Maybe I'm just a sucker for this kind of stuff- maybe that's why I'm a Panthers fan.

I almost wish I had taken that first semester of my freshman year. I'd probably be living in California making good money, instead of in debt and getting crushed constantly.

Job Stability - fields that require a lot of nuanced decision making.  So that includes things like trades, legal and medical fields, good ole education (but no one should do it....), and whatever kind of niche you can fill.

Education sucks because we have to bear the brunt of bad paternal decisions.  Never read to your kids when they were young?  Well it's my fault your 9th grader can't read a 4th grade book.  That kind of stuff sucks.

I had a kid ask me something like that before spring break, what to do to make good money and have some job security.

I'll counter the main idea of the post and say that there's nothing stable.  New laws and regulations can render certain fields completely redundant.  A freeze in construction can put a hurt on trade jobs.  The world is too unstable right now to really have a secure job.

Right now, I'm at a school where I have a lot of job security.  They need me for my classroom work, and the REALLY need me for the other stuff I do on campus.  So that works, for now.  If a new administration shows up, I could be out a job pretty quickly, and then it's back to the drawing board for me.  Everyone wants a quick and easy answer, but there aren't any.

Well, there's one:  be rich.  Weather by marriage, lottery, inheritance, whatever, it's a pretty good situation to get stuck in.

Hang in there, it will pay off in the long run.

Until the singularity happens programmers will always have work and good to great programmers will be very well paid.

I like how you say until singularity happens, when that happens it will be bigger then Jesus Christ, and I'm not joking a single bit.

I'm currently in year 19 of being a radiologist and only plan on working 6 - 8 more years then I'm out.  I started out just as medicine in general (radiology in particular) was seeing reimbursements drop and drop. Past three years I've been doing  teleradiology which is great, work from home, one week on one week off, great pay.  I wish I had gone this route ten years ago.  BUT if I was to start all over again I would not have done medicine and like SOJA said do it only if you have a real desire.  If you want to stay somewhat in the medical field go into dentistry or orthodontics.  No call, no weekends, no insurance companies.  Plus if for some reason you make a mistake, people usually won't die because of it.

This makes me feel great!
