My Panthers Big Board top 152...

Bronn

Recommended Posts

I will probably continue watching some film and researching some of the guys further down the list, and edit accordingly by noon tomorrow, but here is what I think our board might look like right now. I stopped at 152 because it was getting pretty overwhelming, lol, and 152 is our 5th round pick.

Again, no positions that I don't think we'll give much value to (such as QB) are included, and there are a handful of guys that find themselves removed from the board completely.

If/when I get around to finalizing it tomorrow, I will post it in this thread.

If you're going this deep, you need to include QB I think. Very possible we draft a later round QB to groom as Cam's backup. And it'd be a wise thing to do if we do it.

Aside from the top 5 or so, I don't think there's much left in this draft. I don't think we'll get a top 5 QB because 3-4 of them could go round 1.

whats your pick though?

I've always been a Fournette guy, but I am getting cold feet for a multitude of ticky-tack reasons.

If we trade up (which I think and hope we don't) I think it will be for Garrett, Adams, or Thomas.

Adams is probably my favorite top 5 talent for the Panthers, although getting Garrett would be amazing with Pep back in town. I like both Thomas and Fournette pretty equally behind them.

I think Garrett goes #1, though. I do like both Adams and Thomas better than Fournette, but if they've vetted Leonard's durability and those rumors of him being "all about the fame" (which I don't really buy anyways, since all indicators are that he's pretty selfless and humble,) then I'd be happy with him too.

The only players I would move up for are Garrett, Adams, Thomas, and Fournette. In that order. That's my top 4 players in the draft. I wouldn't be too upset if we had to move up to get one of them, but there is talent at RB and S way later on in the draft.

I'd be happy with staying put and taking Allen, or trading down a bit in the Trubisky sweepstakes.

Anyway, it is incredibly hard to predict right now.

What a euphoric moment that would/will be if Fournette is gone and they take Barnett to the shock and awe of the clueless masses.

Outside of the top 3 DEs, there is a huge drop off. I think G-man even alluded to this as well.

As I said, I've always been a Fournette guy, but I'm just starting to worry about durability and am taking the point of RB being overvalued in the top 10 into consideration.

I think after Leonard, there is a dropoff at RB. McCaffrey isn't even on his level and he's my number 2. But good RBs can be had in the third round of this draft, and if one of the top 3 DEs or Allen, or a top DB is still on the board and Fournette is gone, I have no problem going with one of the defensive guys at 8.

Also, after the top 15 or so picks, I think there is an overall talent drop off. But the next 30-40 guys are all likely solid starting caliber guys. If we can move down and stay in the top 15 and pick up another second rounder, there is a lot of value in that, too.

I think both Davis Webb and Josh Dobbs are possibilities later, and could definitely be groomed into solid career backups. And we've shown interest in both.

I think Dobbs is gone in the second or third. Most likely the second. There are teams out there that like him more than they are letting on, I think. Webb might not sneak out of the 3rd but, unless we plan on trading Derek Anderson or Joe Webb during the draft, I really don't think we take a QB that early. We have too many other needs, at least from a depth standpoint, to go after a project QB in this draft.

I think we might have brought both in to get some insight on their teammates (Cam Sutton, Alvin Kamara, Chad Hansen and a couple late round/UDFA OL from Cal) and to make other teams think we were looking at QBs.

Wow, thats incredible work man. I've watched the piss out of players on draft breakdown and I don't think I made it past 25 players or so.

What methods did you use to come up with your rankings? How many players did you go back and watch games of?

I YouTube a lot of stuff on pretty much everyone I can. All of them. I'd say my top 90 or so I have spent hours researching. I catch some college FB when I can, but it is harder nowadays.

I try to make mental notes of what all the "experts" say about guys, too, and what the Huddle says about some of them, but most of it is gut feeling from things I see on tape. It is easier on offensive skill positions, and harder on DBs. Highlight reels are not the greatest things to use, and it is a bonus if you can find every play a guy has in at least one or two games, so you see the average and negative stuff too.

One of the most fun things is watching a guy's highlight reel and another guy in the tape catching your eye... I've had that happen with some guys like Rasul Douglas. He wasn't so high on my radar until he started showing up doing good things in other guys' tape.

I think being a scout would be an awesome job. I like doing this kind of stuff as a hobby and football enthusiast. I can't imagine how awesome it would be to get paid for doing it.
