Twice as many personnel men projected that Newton would end up as a bust instead of a superstar.

"He's got all the talent in the world," said Tom Heckert, general manager of the Cleveland Browns. "But I don't know if anybody knows what you're getting."

Quote

"I don't like any of them, really," said a national scout for a team with an established starter. "There's no Sam Bradfords. There's no Josh Freeman. I think they're all second- or third rounders."

Throughout his young life, Newton has been a lightning rod for intense discussion. It certainly is the same way in NFL draft rooms.

"I got emotional about it in our meetings," said one scout. "Our coaches just ripped his (expletive), but I'd take him top-10. This guy is so talented, so much a winner, such a force. He has won two national championships back-to-back (junior college in 2009).

"It's just a matter of time, getting better with his accuracy. If people can be patient with Peyton Manning losing almost every game his first year, then why can't they be patient with this guy? Is this a different standard for Newton?

"He's got a lot of baggage, there's no doubt about it. But they're not all clean. There's just something about this guy."

Well since the opportunity presented itself, I went through that and had a good laugh.

Hindsight shows he's the GOAT MLB, but certainly a big reminder that Huddle GMs know absolutely nothing. The following is a reflection that we all just don't know everything until the player plays.

(It's really funny seeing the amount of people complaining about us not picking up at DT, then said people complaining about us taking two DTs in a row the following year, but that's none of my business.)

I think I'm gonna be sick. I'll be rooting for him, but man I don't feel good about this. They just told TD they have no faith in him. It's one thing to have no faith in your head and plan for the worst, it's another to blow a 1st on it and state it as flatly as they did.

Like I said before, I hope this pick means Davis is on his way out. I am going to be pissed if our first rounder is on the bench because we have too much hope in a guy we should've dropped this offseason.

Are we all going to be happy if our first rounder is sitting on the bench? Im going to have to wait and see what we do with Davis before I get excited about this pick.

But @Crixtala proves there's hope:

So many good gems from that thread.

Carry on...

"Tacklers are easy to find"

that might be the most "madden" comment ever.

I don't know why but when I read that it made me think of the ATL game where Keukly got beat by Julio Jones in an obvious mismatch fugged up Defensive play.

It's the biggest non play ever but the dude should have been beat by yard but he was still in the play and a foot or so away from disrupting it.

Luke is special.  That is all...

Not very different from the comments I got from many huddlers on this site when I kept saying he was the best defensive player in the draft that year.

The person I have said is the best offensive player in this draft is McCaffrey. Let's see if I am right again.

Yea I hated the pick at the time. I didn't doubt his talent, I just had faith Beason would return to form. Glad I was wrong, Beason was great but if he had returned to form we probably wouldn't have seen the utter domination of Luke at MLB. He woulda been stuck as just a pretty good OLB.

    • The problem with Tmac im almost certain he will go top 5 and I can't see either Jacksonville or New England passing him up.   I think in a perfect world we draft either Tmac or Hunter, but they interviewed Prime on Speak today and he said he will have a say in where Sanders and Hunter play. So I'm not even sure if Hunter is a option now lol.
    • Trading Deontae was 100% the right call, as he's not a #1 either and we weren't going to re-sign him, but we still got an awful return for him (thankfully the Mingo trade made up for it). And yes, we need that smaller shifty WR, but we also need a true outside #1 as neither XL or Coker are that. That's why I think T-Mac is a perfect fit for us in the early 1st round as that outside #1, Coker and XL could both play on the other outside and in the slot, and find a small shifty WR to work from the slot too, with Sanders, Brooks, and now Hubbard with the extension, plus our OL, is an offense that can succeed with a good game manager type of QB and not need a superstar.
    • Put the pipe down. You are what your record says you are. They need talent and a lot of it. Brown is set but he can use upgrades all around him. ARob is fine but a short timer so competition is needed as a hedge against him chasing money next year. They need a bunch of LBs. Jewell is stopgap and Shaq is losing a step. He's the smartest of the group but he can no longer hang with a TE. They are playing harder yes, but it's due to grit and pride more than skill. They are finally getting tired of getting their asses kicked. Unfortunately for them the beatings will continue until moral improves.
