Super!  I've been doing low carb with high protein for years.  You do feel better.  Would love to drop more pounds and will eventually.  You plateau a lot with that kind of diet.  I still enjoy beer, wine, scotch, bourbon, rum........  Bye-the-way, happy birthday.

Dear Jeremy,

     Thank you for the great advice. I have been on panic meds for the last 5 years or so. I am also 40 and have been told to get my cholesterol down. I am seriously considering your advice, to change how I feel. I feel old and achy sometimes. If I choose to make this change I'll keep you posted on my progress. I suppose if the panthers have a great season, we can skip some of those blood pressure issues. By the way Happy Birthday!!!

Intermittent fasting has been great for me. Great for maintenance on non-training days and weight loss, if you are consistent in what you're consuming and with your workouts. I have been losing 1 lb per week for about a month now and it's all been fat. No noticeable loss in strength or endurance.

Late last year I was on the precipice of heart disease. One day, I found myself in the emergency room with blood pressure high enough to cause a heart attack or stroke. I laid on their bed as they got it under control, and all I could think about was how my wife was overseas and my kids have no one to pick them up from school if something happened to me. 

After they fixed the issue, that day I went to my primary care physician who then put me on two blood pressure meds along with a cholesterol med.

I turned 40, they said, these things happen. It is your genetics, no way around it. I realized I was now a guy that had to be on a prescription med tether the rest of my life. That didn't sound good. 

So, for months I did all the reading up on the issue I could. Anything nutrition related I read, listened to, absorbed. I investigated all of the latest trends, some I was very familiar with. I have been doing the low card high protein thing off and on for the better part of this century. Some sounded like they were just made up (blood type diet? huh?). 

Then, one day I stumbled upon one way of eating that had actual scientific proof of not only halting the progression of heart disease, but actually reversing it. One way of eating had randomized double blind peer review studies and even angiograms of arteries being opened up again. 

So, at Christmas last year I started a Whole Foods Plant Based diet. Basically, I cut out all animal products and processed foods. The idea is to fill your body with foods loaded with nutrients at every opportunity, and stop eating foods that are proven to contribute to heart disease. 

For breakfast, instead of eggs and sausage, I would have a fresh smoothie with berries, leafy greens, and oatmeal. 

For lunch, instead of a burger and fries, I would have a big salad with beans and corn. 

For dinner, instead of pizza I would have perhaps a bean and brown rice burrito with whole wheat tortilla. 

Snacks throughout the day were apples, oranges, pears, unsalted mixed nuts. 

I do enjoy a glass of red wine in the eves. 

To be completely honest, I was hoping this new way of living did not work. It seemed a bit extreme, but not as extreme as cracking open my chest for surgery. I would give it a few weeks, see what happened. 

Fast forward 4 months to today, my 42nd birthday. 

I have lost 33 pounds. (218 to 185) Having to buy new clothes is the only downside I have discovered. 

I am off all blood pressure meds. My BP now hovers at 110/70 which is ideal for anyone of any age. 

I am off all cholesterol meds. The only cholesterol in my body now is the cholesterol it makes itself. 

I went from 4 cups of coffee a day to a single cup in the morning. I have so much energy now that I just don't need it. 

A few weird things happened also. My chronic back pain I have had for years went away. This might be due to the anti inflammatory nature of plant foods. Also, my household has been sick a few times with cold, flu, and a nasty stomach bug. I, however, was not touched by any of it. That is definitely new for me.

Anyways, I wanted to tell you all this in case you ever find yourself in the spot I found myself in. If you find yourself on cholesterol, blood pressure or type two diabetes meds, it is extremely likely you don't have to be. It is a lifestyle choice that led you there, and it can be reversed. In fact, you can start to see reversal in just a few weeks. Your body is eager to fix itself, you just have to stop injuring it so that it can catch up. 

Am I saying you should have zero animal products? No. I now have a nice piece of fresh fish every other week or so. Just a choice I have made. You can have up to 10% of your daily calorie intake be from animal products and still see the same benefits that I have seen. Just make sure it is a nice cut of meat and not a hot dog or lunch meat. Processed meats are classified as Group 1 Carcinogens by the world health organization, alongside cigarettes and asbestos.

I am a disciplined as far as what I put in my body...I have struggled to convert to a mostly plant diet for one reason, protein.

As someone who lifts weights almost daily, I need 150-200 grams of protein a day and I just don't know how to get that on a plan to based diet.

 

For now I eat fish and chicken, maybe red meat once or twice a month but I'd really like to cut back I just can't seem to get enough on that diet. Pea protein and tofu is the only high protein options I have come across, and I'm still not sure if Whey protein qualifies as plant based.

 

thoughts/ suggestions?

For the people in here asking about diet etc, I'll save you hundreds/thousands of dollars. Here's the deal-

Setup a meeting with your doctor. Get the good, bad, and ugly. 

Adjust/fix your life first. Stress, drama, money problems need to be under control, so no issues arise during weight loss.(sometimes this fixes your weight problem too)

Be honest. I know that's asking a lot, but it's needed.

Now starts the weight loss. Simply put; smarter/healthier eating and move more. That's it. 

Honestly all it takes to get back in shape is 130 hours. That's it.

Simple math one hour per day, 5 days a week, at 6 months you are in shape.

Now alittle further, you can do the 130 how you seem fit. I couple of guidelines-  don not exceed 2 and a half but more than 45 minutes of training per exercise. That does not include looking at your phone, talking to Bros, scratching your arse. Actual heart pumping is the time. You can do two different workouts per day, just don't go over 5 total hours. 

Again less overall eating, read ALL labels, be smart/honest, and put in a legit 130 hours of movement. That's all folks. Now send your Paypal money to [email protected]

@Jeremy Igo happy b-day brotha, and congrats on your new diet. 

Another thing I might suggest is trying to incorporate a fast every once in a while. The biggest crime in this country is the culture of eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday, and adding meals in between. Your body was not meant to process food 6-7 times a day. Think of it like a job. If your boss keeps throwing projects at you everyday, all the daily tasks get put to the side. Same thing goes with your body. If your constantly eating, your digestion is always in motion (meaning all your organs are working rigorously to process food) and the essential tasks of your organs (like regenerating, detoxifying, recuperating) are put on the back burner. When you're constantly eating, 80% of the energy you get from food is used to break down that food you just put in, and if food is plentiful, all the gunk that gets built up in your small intestine and stomach linings never gets touched (and that directly results in a lot of the health ailments you were experiencing, high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, etc). You know when you hear your stomach growl? Most people attribute that to hunger, but it's actually your migrating motor complex activated which is sending huge contractions through the walls of your stomach to clean out mucous, food particles, gunk, and other debris that doesn't get touched during normal digestion. This is essential to cleanse your entire body, so a fast is definitely needed to accomplish this

Try a (24-48 hour fast) once a month and it will do your body wonders. If that's too difficult, try juicing a few fruits and vegetables and having 2 of those during the 48 hour period. I swear to you, your body will appreciate this greatly.
