Why not James Conner

Recommended Posts

Saw an article on ESPN where he says he'll be Beast Mode 2.0.

I watched the Pitt/Clemson game and he flat out wore out the Tigers.

He's not a first rounder but If we chose Howard why not Conner in the 2nd?

I only saw that one game but he definitely has those wheels that keep churning and had some pretty serious cuts and isn't afraid of fighting off a tackle.

Other than the fact that he came back from Cancer this guy is a good running back.

Does this really sound like a guy that we want (in the second no less)?

Needs a clean slate of blocks to consistently make his way around the corner on the next level. Could struggle to accelerate from tacklers if he gets too cute. Runs with stiff hips and heavy legs. Lacks quick-escape athleticism for sudden shake in open field. All power, no finesse. Early defensive penetration short-circuits his run. Average lateral movement and not desired amount for every-down back. Can be a little slow to process moving parts in front of him. Not a press-and-cut back and needs to learn to set blocks up better. Hands a little stiff as pass catcher and will fight the ball at times. Tape shows occasional confusion in blitz pick-up. Medical concerns will continue to follow him.

Per NFLcom draft profile (Zierlein)

I mean he's a good story, coming back from cancer and all, but he's not an every down back.  He's a fullback project to be honest.  We have a better version already in Rockhead (if he can get on the field).

If the Panthers really are looking for another power back and don't pick up Fournette, I wouldn't be against taking James Conner as early as our late 2nd honestly. He doesn't have to be the fastest or shiftiest dude on the field. If Ross didn't have medical issues I'd be pulling pretty hard for Ross at 8 and Conner or Foreman in ideally round 4 or 5.
