Can TJ watts be a future 4-3 DE??

WOW!!

Recommended Posts

If we drafted TJ in the 2nd round could he develop into a 4-3 DE starter in a year..

TJ is 6-4 255 lb now..  In a year he could gain weight and strenght and learn how to rush from his hands in the dirt..

While this year he can be a situational passrusher..

would this work..

OVERVIEW

The third Watt brother decided it was time to join his older siblings in the NFL after an excellent junior season. Following in the footsteps of J.J. (a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year) and Derek (sixth-round pick as a fullback by San Diego) won't be easy. In fact, it wasn't easy for Watt to get on the field his first couple of seasons with the Badgers, redshirting as a tight end in 2013 and losing the following season with a right knee injury. Watt then tore up his left knee during spring practice in 2015, having surgery but returning to play as a reserve linebacker in all 13 games (eight tackles, 1.5 for loss). Finally healthy in 2016, he won a starting job and excelled, garnering second-team Associated Press All-American and first-team All-Big Ten honors with 63 tackles, 15.5 for loss, and 11.5 sacks.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Produced at high-end level with just one season of full-time football. Has desired length for the edge with room to accommodate more size. Attacks blockers with early arm extension and utilizes push-pull technique to upset their balance as his pet move against run and pass. Outstanding hand play in his game. Disruptive as first man in on twists. Always ready to leap into passing lane and deflect the throw. Strikes fast and early to create leverage points. Rarely has helmet involved in play and is constantly searching for the ball. Understands art of quick disengagements and can flatten out against outside run. Has good agility to clear trash near his feet and pursue the ball. Functional in space when asked to cover. Can get skinny when shooting gaps and has decisiveness and pursuit quickness to crash down the line and close-out cutback lanes. Consistent, wrap-up finisher as tackler.

SOURCES TELL US

"He looked a lot stronger and a lot more confident on tape this year. He needs to get bigger, but he's already a strong guy. I can see him standing or playing base end for a 4-3 team. He's going to keep getting better." -- Midwest area scout for AFC team

NFL COMPARISON

 Paul Kruger

BOTTOM LINE

A long-limbed effort rusher who posted impressive numbers against the run and pass in just one year as a starter. He is a tireless worker who pursues from snap to whistle and his brother, J.J., will be a tremendous resource for technique and pass-rush plan. While he is unlikely to win a race to the edge, he's a plus run defender who can get to the quarterback with plus hand work and relentless effort.

I can see TJ Watt transitioning to become a 4-3 end after a year or two of strength and conditioning, to fill out his frame. TJ has a great combination of explosiveness and bend that few edge players have in this draft. If you take a look at his draft profile, you'll see that he excelled in multiple areas and is a great athlete as indicated by his 6.79 3-Cone time which ranks him second among LBs and DEs.

One quote shows NFL teams think TJ Watt can play 4-3 end. "He looked a lot stronger and a lot more confident on tape this year. He needs to get bigger, but he's already a strong guy. I can see him standing or playing base end for a 4-3 team. He's going to keep getting better." -- Midwest area scout for AFC team

Additionally, it Gettleman made some comments at the last presser that seem to indicate he isn't as concerned with player projections for 4-3 or 3-4 defensive line. Even if for some reason TJ Watt can't play 4-3 end, the Panthers actually played a decent number of snaps last year in a base 3-4, and I'm sure Wilks can figure out how to get him on the field.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
