The Next Head Coach

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I think this is a hidden quality of picking up a retread and something that bears consideration. Cowher or Holmgren could be the difference in getting real quality at the OC & DC positions.

I know everybody is different, but I think JR got burned with Seifert and will probably not go that way again. I could be wrong. :) Won't be the first time... Seifert was a product of the organization just like Cowher. I really hope they go with new blood, somebody who is hungry and ready to prove he should have been a coach 2 or 3 years ago. Garrett might be a way to go, but will Dallas really let him go?

Here's the big question I keep coming back to. Why isn't he head coach of the Raiders?

Seriously, losing out to Tom Cable? Why?

(and yeah I know it's the Raiders, but it's a valid question)

For that matter, why isn't he a head coach elsewhere? It's not like other teams had to wait to interview him because he had to coach in the postseason.

I can't answer for elsewhere, but with the Raiders it's likely partially due to the fact that Big Al does not hire defensive minded HCs.

I have to be honest that I'm a little wary of bringing in one of the older guys but then I considered what Tampa Bay, Kansas City, and Denver are going through right now and maybe this isn't the right wa to go. I know Rex Ryan is doing well but he may be more of an exception rather than the rule. I guess what it boils down to is the fact that this team's worst problem right now is coaching. I really feel like we have the talent to be 2-1 or even 3-0 at this point in the season but the team has come out really flat. An article I read made a good point that sometimes in a coaches career the players just stop listening and buying into what the coach says, I wonder if that is what is going on right now.

So here's my point in all this ramble. The coach needs to be someone who can turn around this franchise quickly and get it back on the right track. No more giving away future 1st rounders for 2nd round talent. No more overpaid players who under perform. And no more preference to drafted players who aren't performing. I think the best bet for the job is someone who can rebuild the COACHING staff and FO. Find a guy who can get the right people around him and change the mentality of this organization. Then when that guy is ready to step away one of the coaches around him can step up and take over.

I think thats the best way to go right now because we have talent to work with but not much a future to speak of. We have no QB to replace Jake (although Moore should get a shot), we have no 1st round pick next year (which should be a high one), we have the Julius Peppers situation to deal with, and we have several spots on the team that just don't have any answers depth wise (Safety, Corner, Offensive Line, Wide Receiver, and Defensive Tackle). We don't need to clean house or rebuild, we need someone to reconfigure the coaching staff and start preparing the team for the future (coaching and players).

Obviously I think the man for the job, love him or hate him, is Bill Cowher.

KK I am not addressing you specifically at all...but why are people in general crowning Rex's ass as a great HC/great hire already?

#1, the NYJ WERE NOT A BAD FOOTBALL TEAM WHEN HE TOOK OVER.

#2 it's game three of the season.

#3 he kept the same OC and offense so didn't have to change anything on that side of the ball

I respect him a lot as a DC and think he's well proven there, but in no way has he proven to be some no brainer of a hire as a HC. Right now, I believe the players are responding well to the fact that he is the anti-Mangenius. You know, the way the Cowboys responded to Wade Phillips being the anti Parcells in 2007? I predict his macho swaggering thing will wear thin within 2 years if he doesn't produce. Just like any other coach's demeanor is picked on when the team loses.

Fireball, I agree it's way to early to crown Rex Ryan. He's done a good job so far, but it's only 3 weeks in.

There are always potentially good football coaches available. The trick is finding them, and hiring them. John Fox did a good job taking this team from expecting failure to expecting success. Now it's time to find the guy to bring us to that consistent success.

Seifert didn't inherit everything. He inherited an offense. No different than Dungy. And since he was in house, he certainly has nothing to do with Switzer. I mean, I can understand crapping on him for what he did here, but there are a lot of valid analogies between him and all these people here getting enamored by a ring made from someone else's team.

Which is why people are getting all worked up on big names.

Also I'm about mortified by people who want to see what a coach looks like (i.e., style over substance, or just plain "I don't know anything about this guy but I'm gonna fall in love with him") and that people don't seem to know that Cowher is a defensive guy.

They need a personality that can instill his personality into the team, someone that would've been in Peppers face spitting at him for being a worthless sack of crap.

i.e. we need someone to question their manhood, bring out their pride, badly. Fox isn't doing that.

A couple of names that I haven't seen that I think should be considered.

Brian Schottenhymer - Same peteigree as the Ryan brothers. I also really like his style of offense.

Mike Nolan - I really thought Nolan got a bad rep for what was going on in San Fran. For the most part, he brought the 49er's out of the funk they were in and almost got them back to a successful franshise. I felt the mistakes there were more the FO fault and Nolan became the scapegoat. Now he seems to have turned a Denver defense that was horrible into a productive group, albeit not dominate.

Urban Meyer - Yeah, I already know what everyone is going to say. But here is my reasoning. I see Meyer as not only a winner but within the same mindset as Jimmie Johnson had when he came out of Miami to Dallas. Also, if you like Bill Bilichick then Meyer is the closest guy to that style of coaching. Belichick considers Meyer, above all of his other assistants and coordinators, to be his protegie.

Bill Parciels - He's getting up there in years and doesn't seem to want to go back to coaching but reports have said that like always he is looking for his next new project and is growing tired of the celebity show in Miami. More than any other retread, including Cowher, this is the guy you want to bring fire back to a team and comes with the greatest of reputations. Definently not a long term solution as a HC but the system in which he would bring could set the franshise up for years to come as it has for many other teams.

I like Nolan, but I think he is like LeBeau...better at DC not a great HC.

Urban Myer...yeah BB does trust him, and even had a roster full of pro bust FL WRs in 2006 including Chad Jackson & Reche Caldwell and got rid of the best one which was Jabar Gaffney (and letting him go was a mistake, IMO). Maybe Meyer could be an OC, not sure. I am not a big fan of college guys being hired @ HC though.

B Schott...maybe...but I want an defensive HC.

Just get Cowher as HC and either the Steelers LB coach or the Vikings DC as DC.

Bring in Casey Hampton to play NT and switch to a 3-4, get Brayton or CJ to play 3-4 DE or if they don't work get someone in FA. Let Peppers walk and have our LBs be Brown, Connor, Beason, Davis and boom we have a great defense again.
