Vernon Butler - Luxury pick gone wrong?

I wasn't a fan of the Butler pick, because I wanted us to go offense: I wanted TE Hunter Henry and then WR Shepard in the second.  Having said that, give Butler a chance.  He was injured and everyone needs a good rotation with as much as teams pass today.  Butler can fill in for KK and Star and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if we select a DT in the 4th-6th round coming up.

He will be solid rotistional player but his ceiling is not higher than KK's .

Panther shoud have drafted Hunter Henry

DG want make the same mistake again with JR & Rivera mode intuend this season.

We don't know that! KK had a slight head start on Butler playing in the Big 10, plus KK only flashed in his first year

Butler is not a bust. We won't have any idea if he's a bust until at least the end of next season at the earliest. Butler was a value pick, and other teams considered taking much higher in the draft. This offseason Butler has improved his core strength, and that could lead to a game changing improvement in play. The Butler you saw last season was NOT the finished product. You have not seen him hit his ceiling yet, so the bust label doesn't apply.

I didn't know a lot about Butler when he was picked. After researching his college career I was a little surprised about his low sack total. I know DT's usually don't post eye popping sack numbers, but I don't think Butler had 10 sacks while starting in college in school. He also doesn't seem to be the run stopper that Starr is.

I have no idea what is upside will be. But based on the numbers I saw I was surprised G-Man didn't pick another DL with a more proven track record of rushing the passer. I also thought we could've used an offensive threat to help the offense. So I was a little perplexed by the pick, but not as much as I was by the selection of Funchess in the 2nd round the year before.

Now, Butler is part of the Panther family so I'm hoping he's healthy and has a breakout year.

    • Entering year three, and there are reasons I would look into this more before offering a fourth or fifth. He was drafted in round 2 in 2023.  His rookie season, he played 14 games and was targeted 40 times.  Targeted 3 times a game, basically.  He caught 27 (67.5%).  A TE target/catch percentage should be higher than a WR--70-75% is considered good.  In 11 games this season, he was targeted 32 times and caught 21.  Again, about 3 targets per game, with a target catch percentage of 66%. They decided to draft a TE after his rookie season. This means they did not see him as a #1 TE. He has not been very healthy (9 missed games in 2 seasons--26%). Could he be better with a better QB?  Probably.  Having said all that, he is an excellent blocking TE.  I would trade a 6th for him, but only if I knew Thomas and Tremble were not coming back.
    • 4th, 5th or later for him all day. Get it done ASAP.
    • the personal problems is something that would have to be checked out, but I'd do it.  That's how we got Greg Olsen.  He was a first round pick and we traded a 3rd for him a couple of years later.  He became our best TE ever
