Vernon Butler - Luxury pick gone wrong?

If you have starters at every position then why do we draft players?   Should we pass on first rounders because we already have a starter at every position and any rookie would be a backup from the jump?   You guys kill me with your obsession that all 1st rounds must start right away or they are busts.

It's silly.

We've got Butler for 4 more years on his rookie contract, assuming we pick up the 5th year option. He'll take over for Star when we let him walk after this season. Sounds like a smart pick to me.

I'm not saying Butler isn't going to be good. My perception was that he was drafted in the event that KK walks. If he can play the gap filler than that's fine. However, knowing what we know now, would you have preferred drafting Hunter Henry? Derrick Henry? Strerling Shepherd? Michael Thomas? All of these players went in the second round and would have made HUGE (division altering) contributions to our team. But based on the feedback I'm glad we have a forum of #noregrets

ya'll stupid for trolling this man.   Dude doesn't post often so why not just answer his question.

My thoughts are that the pick isn't a bust for these reasons.   1) you don't really know what you've got out of him yet.  Butler could turn into an all pro next year.  Who knows.   2) you're posting out of the assumption that we're only going to run 4dl 3LB as our only package.   What happens in a goal line set when we have butler/kk/star in addition to the DE's (pep/Addison). it's killer in short yardage situations.  It's important to stop short yard runs so that in itself makes butler more valuable than what meets the eye.  Also, depth.   If KK goes down for any amount of time,  you don't want to fall off a table in regards to who can come off the bench as a replacement.

To conclude.   Butler had flashes last year, and blocked two kicks.  he didn't play much.  I am glad to have him on the team and hope he stays awhile.

You generally don't want to draft role players In the first, with that being said no way you can call him a bust

He will be solid rotistional player but his ceiling is not higher than KK's .

Panther shoud have drafted Hunter Henry

DG want make the same mistake again with JR & Rivera mode intuend this season.
