NFL Referees Want To Eradicate Celebration Penalties; The League Wants To Do The Opposite

The head of the NFL Referees Association, Scott Green, said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that the on-field officials think the league office is putting them in a difficult situation with trying to figure out where the line is between a celebration that deserves a penalty and one that can be permitted. Green said the officials would prefer to eliminate penalties and instead enforce any celebration issues with fines.

“Nothing is worse than someone going 80 yards for a touchdown and then we’re trying to figure out does that warrant a flag for what he’s doing in the end zone,” Green said. “We don’t really enjoy that. If we could get to a point where it would simply be fines by the league, that would be great. The issue we’ll still have is that guys can get pretty creative out there. The question of whether it’s a foul or not a foul, hopefully we’ll get closer to more of a black-and-white situation.”

Sadly, the NFL wants to retain that "No Fun League" motto by steering in the opposite direction:

Unfortunately, the NFL is considering going in the opposite direction, and enforcing celebration violations only with on-field penalties, not with fines after the fact. That puts even more pressure on the officials to figure out where the seemingly arbitrary lines on celebration penalties are drawn.

Discuss.

Ill never agree with celebration penalties. As long as they aren't taunting, humping something, masturbating, or most importantly wasting too much time then who gives a fug

**edit- I guess I do agree with them under certain circumstances haha

i agree with this 100%. gotta protect the kids and the integrity of the game. this is meant to be a family sport, and frankly myself and millions of other football-loving fans dont want our children subjected to explicit innuendo as a celebration. its one thing to do an Aaron Rodgers "discount double check" and its completely another to be standing in the endzone acting like youre in the bedroom. i am not ashamed at all to suggest that it should be an automatic ejection for such shenanigans, flame away, idgaf.

as for the taunting and wasting time, as far as im concerned, there's already penalties for those things and excessive celebration that taunts or delays the game should be penalized under one of those two banners.

When the officials can't figure out when a hit to the head happens, I'm not surprised the don't know how to discern excessive celebration.

They can't even tell when someone's sliding or not nowadays. It's terrible.

It seems like during the season that that one of the leading NFL stories more often than not is a controversial critical call by the refs. I get the whole "no pressbis bad press" mentality, but at some point it causes people to start questioning the integrity of the game.

I think that's just it. The NFL has gotten so popular and is so profitable that as long as the league is talked about, good or bad, the owners don't care because people will tune in either way. The only thing that has actually forced the league to change course at any point recently is outrage over domestic violence. Even that didn't affect sales or attendance though. Just look at how much money cities are throwing at the league for the mere right of building billion dollar stadiums.
