BREAKING: Short extended, 5 years 80 million

So we're basically paying Short for 1 good year.

If I'm understanding right we're paying him 20 Mill each of the first 2 years and then 13 Mill for the last 3?

Either way, we should've seen how he played out this year. Short seems to be inconsistent and couldn't fight off 1 on 1 blocks last season. A big wtf move yet again by DG. This also makes the Butler pick last year look even more stupid. We could've already had a very good backup TE behind Olsen with a year in our system already or a better DE or S or someone that would actually be starting and not sitting on the bench.

Will you still be laughing when our DEs can't pressure on the QB? Or our Safeties still getting beat? Or when Ed Dickson drops another pass?

Peppers and Addison and CJ and draft pick got the DE rotation on lock. Not worried.

Safeties- Mike adams got this....pro bowler 2 of the last 3 years exactly what we needed at SS position. Slides Coleman over to his FS position where he is a beast.

Ed Dickson will be supplanted by draft pick.

----

you do realize we get to participate in the Draft, right? Did you completely forget any of our offseason moves to set us up for said draft? Or you just blind hating?

Good bye Negative Nancy

right but if short didnt sign, which there was a chance of after 2015 performance,  then we are boned at the most important position on the defense. its called insurance for a reason. you hope it doesnt happen, good to be prepared though.

This deal was getting done ... no matter what.  Panthers weren't going to face the $hit storm that would come with letting another star player walk away.  Could be a great deal or maybe not ... it's up to KK now.  Personally, I am glad he will be around for awhile.

what in the world does this contract have to do with Butler? it will have zero effect on his development (that's up to him, by the way) and by the time he needs a new deal, assuming he's earned it, there will be plenty of room to fit him in.

if anything this contract is a nice carrot for guys like Butler, to know that if they perform at the level at which they're expected, top 5 money at their position is waiting for them.

I can see the argument that this deal is the writing on the wall for Star, but even then it's not definitive. Star plays a different position, isn't lined up for big pass rusher bucks, and may only get 3-4 years in his next deal, either with Panthers or some other team. thereby also having zero effect on a potential Butler deal.

also it's much easier to land a player with the traits that Star brings to this team with, say, a 3rd-4th round comp pick, than a guy like Short.

I think we will have money to pay star. Our DE's are not getting paid top dollar, so that leaves room to pay Star if we choose. I'd rather let one of our Guards walk before not re-signing Star. Odds of finding a good guard later in the draft are exponentially higher than finding a DT of Star's caliber.

Butler was a waste for 2016, but then again 2016 was a waste of a season anyway. Now I just view him as an added Bonus. Almost like he's an additional late 1st rounder for us this year, as last year he mostly rode the pine and learned the ropes. If we didn't have Butler, who knows maybe Gettleman would have made another mistake  on a guy like Soliai for DT depth.

Either way, I feel bad for any fan who can't rejoice in having Short locked up long term.
