This is terrible logic.

Literally everything went right for us that year. You can't just use what happened in 2015 as a template to success.

If going 17-2 and playing in the Superb Owl isn't a template for success, what is?  We should never stop trying to get better, but Jeebus, that was a pretty good template.

The knock on Butler is that even though he has out of this world strength in his upper body, his lower body is not as strong as you would like at that position. He doesn't have that Warren Sapp type "ass mass" that you need to drive into the pocket. And if you look at his lower body you can see that for yourself. That's why I liked the idea of tagging Short to buy time to have a better look at Butler. If he plays near Short's level then you can save a lot of money. We're locked into Short now, so we now have a pricey (draft pick price) rotation. I'll admit I have not understood what Gettleman is doing with this team from day one. I don't get the draft picks, I don't get the plan. I'm lost lol.

what in the world does this contract have to do with Butler? it will have zero effect on his development (that's up to him, by the way) and by the time he needs a new deal, assuming he's earned it, there will be plenty of room to fit him in.

if anything this contract is a nice carrot for guys like Butler, to know that if they perform at the level at which they're expected, top 5 money at their position is waiting for them.

I can see the argument that this deal is the writing on the wall for Star, but even then it's not definitive. Star plays a different position, isn't lined up for big pass rusher bucks, and may only get 3-4 years in his next deal, either with Panthers or some other team. thereby also having zero effect on a potential Butler deal.

also it's much easier to land a player with the traits that Star brings to this team with, say, a 3rd-4th round comp pick, than a guy like Short.

It's almost as if Gettleman thinks there's a window to win a super bowl...

Shhhh!  Don't let him know we see through his words about no windows!  Let him think we believe him! :-)

Whether he believes in windows or not, he's acting like there is one, (butt not (yet at least) putting us in cap hell).  I'm all for it.  I like seeing Gettleman making moves, getting things done.  What a change from last season.

As wonderful as a Superbowl run is, it clearly risks causing distraction, complacency, and perhaps a tendency to evaluate team strengths & weaknesses poorly (basking in the glow of an awesome season.)  This offseason is a breath of fresh air, at least on the player moves. (a little less sure on the coaching moves or lack thereof...!).  Dave is being methodical and focused on priorities.

  • Get a veteran LT - check
  • re-sgn our DEs & augment with Peppers - check
  • Get us some support at SS - check
  • Get us help at Nickel - check

We are in very nice shape on defense.  Yes, need depth & young talent at DE & SS, but I'm ready for a draft heavy on offense.  Dave has set us up VERY well on defense.

You are literally one of the most negative people on this forum, so of course you don't agree with my logic. Our receivers are fine as long as we add a speedy slot receiver. Someone that can get separation and stretch the field. There are more important positions that need to be addressed... Like a second tight end

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Statement from Panthers coach Ron Rivera on Kawann Short's new five-year deal: "KK consistently affects the quarterback and is strong against the run. The mismatches he creates for us on defense force opponents to be aware of him at all times and give us an edge along the defensive line. He's a great player, but also a quality young man who has the respect of his teammates in the locker room. He's everything we're looking for in a Panther."
