2017 NFL DRAFT:  HAVING HIGH DRAFT SLOTS ALONG WITH EXTRA PICKS WILL ALLOW GETTLEMAN & RIVERA THE FLEXBILITY TO TARGET  TWO KEY PLAYERS IN THE 1ST ROUND COVETING QUALITY OVER TALENT AND THE ABILITY TO USE THE 5TH YEAR OPITON.

Quote

Since Dave Gettleman took over as GM of the Carolina Panthers, they have made the fewest draft picks in the NFL.

The low draft total is due in large part to Dave Gettleman willingness to make deals during the NFL Draft. In the past three years, the Carolina Panthers have made a total of four draft day trades.

These trades were made to acquire Bene Benwikere in 2014, Devin Funchess and Daryl Williams in 2015 and last year to select James Bradberry.

While teams would love to have multiple draft picks, it isn’t always quantity. There are teams that could have numerous picks but if the right players aren’t selected, it doesn’t help the product on the field.

The Panthers have done a good job of finding quality football players with limited picks. Of their 21 selections, 13 started at least one game last year. Even after the departure of A.J. Klein in free agency and the trade of Kony Ealy, the Panthers still have 14 of their picks still on the roster.

2016 SEASON EXPOSED MULTIPLE ISSUES THAT PANTHERS NEGLECTED FOR SEVERAL YEARS TOOKEN ADVATANGE BY OPPOSING TEAMS. FOOTBALL IS A TEAM GAME AFTERALL AND WHEN THERE IS NOT A STABLE FOUNDATION OTHER PIECES TEND TO CRUMBLE DURING QUAKES.

OFFENSE

- The Injuries at the OL created a domino affect with defense taking advantage of poor quality tackle play, the rythm and chemistry of players became disrupted creating a ripple affect along the season. With OT's not being able to contain edge rusher and the inability of the "Twin Towers" to create seperation defense where able to key on the Running game and Pumble Newton down during crucial passing downs when that extra second or two is required for a route.

 - Although 2016 was a learning curve the emergence of Darly Williams and signing of Matt Kalil should improve the OL. One factor that will play into the 2017 draft is that across the OL from LT to RT the best strenght of all 5 Hog Mollies is Run Blocking with the flexibility to do multiple scheme whether being Zone, Power, RO , PA etc.

17. Carolina Panthers (6)

Top overall grade: LG Andrew Norwell, 85.7 (No. 11)

Top pass-blocking grade: LG Andrew Norwell, 85.2 (No. 14)

Top run-blocking grade: LG Andrew Norwell, 84.8 (No. 4)

DEFENSE

-The rescinding of Norman's Franchise tag  and fire by trial for the rookie secondary led to a roller coster season for the usually stout Panthers defense. Facing injuries early on & the lack of experience along with injuries to Luke Kuechly who is the primary signal caller led to consistent miscoumincation in the backfield more so than the talent of the CBs. The 2015 defense was turneover machine creating 19 Interceptions with 4 returned for TDs. Look for Wilks to incorporate the CBs ability to play man & zone into playcalling that frees up the Safety  for other assignments.

-This is was one of my reason not needing a safety in the 1st round but it will be beneficial to address it in the mid rounds.

2015 panthers: #11 pass defense YPG | # 4 rush defense YPG  |  #6 total defense YPG

2016 panthers: #29 pass defense YPG | # 6 rush defense YPG | #21 total defense YPG

SOLUTION: IN ORDER TO TAKE ADVATANGE OF CURRENT CORE PLAYERS STRENGTH AND COMPLIMENT THE SUPPORTING CAST, PANTHERS WILL UTILIZE  THE 2 TE SET INORDER TO  "EVOLVE THE OFFENSE " & GO TO MORE OF A TRADITONAL RUN GAME AS RIVERA MENTIONED IN THE OFF-SEASON. THE 2 TE SET  GIVES THE OFFENSE  FLEXIBLITY BETWEEN RUNNING AND PASSING PLAYS WITHOUT CHANGING PERSSONEL KEEPING THE DEFENSE MORE HONEST.

BILL PARCEL BREAKDOWN  AT NFL NETWORK

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-playbook/09000d5d80c49f6c/Playbook-Billick-on-2-tight-end-sets

- In typical 2 TE set you are in a spread alignment with TE on each side, this allows you to run either outside or inside zone run play based on the DE alignment.

- Next it allows you to take one of the TE and put him in the I-Formation as FB,  this gives the offense a hard I-Running game wether it's ISO or Power.

2.thumb.png.738c3a8d5e2a71cc0843a88472c44361.png

- The real benfit of having a complete TE like Greg Olsen & OJ Howard is the ability to go to 3 WR set  by flexing either TE on weak or strong  side based on defense. By spreading the defense you can run with either lighter box or attack the mismatch defender on the TE.

3.thumb.png.c6e72e104ba9de48aa557ce13175599a.png

-Whether seeing the # count  is ideal for running play or audibling  to a 3 or 4 wide  aligment that forces defenses into nickel perssonel or passive the versatility of the 2 TE set will allow the offense to be put in the most ideal formation while still allowng it to set physical tone  and control the tempo of the game.

SHULA- MANY HUDDLERS USUALLY USE SHUAL AS SCAPEGOAT FOR THE OFFENSIVE WHOES, BUT IT'S THE LACK OF PROPER PERSSONEL THAT HAS BEEN HOLDING THE OFFENSE BACK MORE SO THAN PLAY CALLING. WITH HIRING OF FORMER STANDFORD RB COACH LANCE TAYLOR LOOK FOR THE PANTHERS TO HEAVILY USE THE RBS IN RECEVING GAME.

2017 DRAFT:

Quote

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/leonard-fournette?id=2557973

1.8  RB: LEONARD FOURNETTE | 6'-1" 235LBS

STRENGTHS

Full-on, grown man with outstanding definition throughout his body. Built like a linebacker with speed like a receiver. Long, powerful strides get speedy turnover. Click and go runner who hits his second gear faster than most big backs you'll ever see. Able to accelerate and scream around the corner for chunk runs against linebackers lacking speed or urgency to the edge. Powerful hips and thighs shake defenders right off. Tacklers better bring full force and technique. Always the hammer and never the nail. Violent finisher looking to intimidate run-support safeties with crushing blows behind lower pads. Runs feet through any and all contact. Has balance and power to plow through tackle attempts on an angle. Punishing stiff arms go viral. Has experience running from two-back, single-back and off-set looks. Hands are adequate in passing game. Can create for himself with power and speed. Wins in short-yardage and goal-line situations.

USAGE: As Rivera mentioned of taking the running game load off CAM those extra carries will give the Fournette & J-Stew more opportunites to be on the fied. Along with slow development of Devin Funchess &  lack of # 2 WR look for Fournette & J-Stew to be involved in the receivng game as well.

 - In 2011 when Panthers used the 2 TE while having Deangelo & J-Stew that created a potent offense.

D - Williams    155/Att   | 836 yds |  7 TDs | 16/rec | 135 yds | 0 TD

J-Stew             142/Att  | 761 yds | 4 TDs  | 47/rec | 413 yds | 1 TD

CAM                126/Att | 706 yds | 14 TDs

- With long term health concern for Cam there will be enough snaps for both J-Stew and Fournette to be effective players with one topping the 1,000 rushing mark while the other is more utiilzed in the receiving game & Short yardage.

As mentioned previously above the DG valuing quality ove quanity, he will use the 2nd round picks along with future picks to move up and grab Howard.

1.18 TE: OJ HOWARD | 6'-6" 251 LBS

STRENGTHS

Exceptionally gifted athlete. Has long arms and massive hands for his position. Tremendous acceleration into his routes. Has tools to torment defenses on second and third level. Play speed resembles a wide receiver's when the ball is in the air. Linebackers have no shot against him in space. Can turn a short throw into a long gain. Light on his feet and smooth out of his breaks. Easy separator who creates instant throwing windows when he hits the gas. Natural pass catcher who plucks it away from his body. Can adjust to poorly thrown balls and secure contested catches. Shows no lack of toughness over the middle. Can be lined up all over the field. Monster championship game in 2015 season revealed true potential. Has elite ceiling as playmaker. Lands his hands inside the frame as a blocker. Operates with wide base and attempts to snap hips into his block.

USAGE:

As Bill Parcel mentioned in the 2 TE set breakdown, OJ Howard gives Panther's offense the widget player that provides the flexbility in both running & passing plays by allowing to change formation  with same personal.

-In line & FB blocking allows him to stay on the field 99 % of snaps while improving the play of the HB & OL.

-Elite speed, full route tree , & soft hands allows him to take on the #2  WR role with departure of Ginn & slow development of Funchess.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/trey-hendrickson?id=2557943

3.98  DE: TREY HENDRICKSON | 6'-4" 266 LBS

STRENGTHS

Good upper-body turn that presents a difficult target for tackles to punch. Rushes with good lean and has a strong club hand to soften the edge. Uses arm extension and acceleration to generate some speed-to-power push. Impressive, fluid footwork with spin move counter. Hands are effective at warding off cut blocks. Good lateral quickness to squeeze running lane. Rakes at the ball as tackler, forcing six fumbles over final two seasons at FAU. Special teams demon; blocked a punt, two field goals and an extra point in 2016.

USAGE

With CJ , Pepper, & Addison starting the rotation, Trey will come into a perfect situation where he can come in as role players while developing under some of the best. His ability to anchor against the run game will keep him in the mix

PFF

I’ve been meaning to highlight Hendrickson for weeks, as his 91.2 overall grade ranks second in the nation. While he may not have the same pure athleticism of some of the nation’s top pass-rushers, Hendrickson uses good pad level to overpower offensive tackles while using his hands well to make plays both in the passing game and against the run.

While he’s taken his game to a new level this year, Hendrickson is no one-year wonder, as he had 15 sacks, 13 QB hits, and 24 hurries last season. This year, he’s registered nine sacks, nine QB hits, and 47 hurries on his 269 rushes — that’s pressure being created on 24 percent of his rushes, well above the NCAA average of 10 percent for an edge defender.

4.115  SS: KAI NACUA | 6'-2" 211 LBS

PFF #8:  Kai Nacua (BYU)

BYU has quietly been a pipeline for some impressive defensive players over the years. Ezkiel Ansah standing out among the most recent. There’s a good chance Kai Nacua will be the next one on that list. In a loaded safety class, he’s been a name that continues to fly under the radar. That’s incredible to think about given his 6’2″ size and hard-to-miss speed on the field. Oh, and there is also the 12 interceptions he’s produced over the past two years.

Nacua is a robber in the passing game. Quarterbacks are wise to know where he’s lined up on every snap because if they lose track of him, he tends to make them pay with a turnover. That being said, Nacua doesn’t shirk his other duties. He’s a reliable tackler who played a little linebacker at times and shows the capacity to blitz. His instincts are tailor made for the position. He’ll have to prove it against better QBs though.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/ryan-switzer?id=2557960

5.152  WR: RYNA SWITZER | 5'-8" 180 LBS

STRENGTHS

High-volume target for UNC QB Mitch Trubisky. Reliable pass catcher with low career drop rate. Sudden feet to shake press defenders out of his release. Plays at his top speed and doesn't coast. Accelerates and separates on speed outs. Utilizes repeatable footwork in routes. Patterns are crisp. Comes out of breaks at sharp angles and snaps head around immediately to find the ball. Owns comeback routes by driving hard back to the throw. Shows traits of effective option-route specialist in short-yardage and red area. Able to defeat inside leverage technique and find his way back underneath. Had five punt-return touchdowns his freshman season and has seven for his career, with 19 career returns of more than 15 yards.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-pff-scouting-report-ryan-switzer-wr-north-carolina/

Name: Ryan Switzer

School: North Carolina

Position fit: Slot receiver

Stats to know: Switzer caught 77.8 percent of passes thrown to him when lined up in the slot (ranked eighth in the NCAA) and averaged 2.73 yards per route run (ranked 11th).

What he does best:

  • Quickness is his best attribute. He gets up to top speed almost immediately and doesn’t lose any speed when he changes direction.
  • Great footwork. Can run every route with his very consistent breaks and stops, doesn’t give anything away or slow down.
  • Consistent and strong hands. Dropped only 11 of 224 catchable throws over past three seasons (4.9 percent drop rate).
  • Knows how to adjust routes depending on coverage. Can quickly find holes in zones.
  • Smart receiver, successfully ran option routes in tight situations (red zone, third and short, etc).
  • Very good release off the line of scrimmage. Feet can beat press coverage (although he rarely faced it as he was in the slot most of the time).
  • Excellent punt returner, has seven career returns for touchdowns.

Bottom line: Switzer is another slot receiver in a class loaded with slot receivers. While he was extremely productive at North Carolina, it may take some time for him to become a consistent NFL slot receiver. The biggest issue with Switzer is his small catch radius and lack of physicality at the catch point, which could be an issue in the wrong scheme or wrong quarterback. This may be improvable though, and his fantastic route running and quickness will help make up for these issues. He should latch on to a team right away though because of his special teams ability. He’ll be a punt-return threat right out of the gate while hopefully developing into a solid slot receiver down the line.

With Short extended and drafting of Vernon Butler last year, it seems that its less likey for the Panthers to draft a DE in the 1st  two rounds.

Looke for Vernon Butler to take on more of DE snaps.

Butler will not be taking more DE snaps. We also extended Addison, one of the most efficient pass rushers in the NFL. We also resigned Johnson and signed Peppers, actual DE. We will also probably pick a DE to groom in the draft

But the DE will be picked in the mid rounds.

2 of them are old vets expect a lighter load early in the season, which will open up for Butler most likely in the running plays

I think you are making a mistake thinking that the DE may not be in the 1st two rounds. We've met with Barnett, Thomas, Walker and McKinley. Those aren't mid round DEs. I don't know how the draft will fall, but drafting a DE early is certainly not something you can say won't happen.

I don't think u will see a DE drafted till last second or early third as well. We need offense we have worked on defense all off season. It will be offense with high picks count on it!!!

The spot we are picking we are gonna get either Fournette or OJ Howard whom are BPA over DE  IMO.
