Gas On The Fire: Bill Voth Says - With Gun Pointed To Head - McCaffrey Likely Pick

Voth knows the Panthers are going to trade up, that's why he said at 8, we aren't picking at 8 - yeah if we picked at 8 he might be the pick, but instead were moving up for the first best instead of the second best because the price won't be that steep from 8 and we'll never be in position to pick this high again

Lmao we have showed no interest in DE's that we would pick at 8. All y'all can forget that at 8 and we haven't even talked to Barnett. This is not happening sorry.

This is true.  I was just looking at our draft prospect visits and sorting them by the projected round of the player.  Apart from Thomas, we haven't had visits or workouts with any potential round 1 DE.  I was pretty shocked!

(I'll be posting more in a separate thread about draft prospect visits and what it might suggest about our draft board / strategy a bit later today.)

It would take a lot for him to be BPA in my books.

That would mean Allen, Thomas, Garrett, Lattimore, Hooker, Adams, McCaffrey, or Fournette are all off the board by the time we pick.

Well that's where you and many people disagree. I think that the consensus is that Lattimore, Adams and of course Garrett have more upside than Howard after all is said and done.

We pretty much know that Garrett will be gone, so I don't even think he's worth discussing. The Browns are going to take him.

As for Thomas and Allen, specifically for the Panthers, some would argue that they aren't necessarily slam dunk scheme fits. Fournette and McCaffrey are running backs. Many just don't believe that running backs should be valued so high considering it's a so-called passing league, plus some believe (in error as far as I'm concerned) that you can find beastly RBs easier than you can find similarly skilled players at other positions in later rounds. Not to mention the question of whether McCaffrey is an every down type of back, or whether Fournette is simply overrated, or at the very least over-hyped. I'm telling you what others may be thinking, not necessarily what Gettleman is thinking.

As for Hooker, most would say Adams has higher upside, and Hooker, though good, may not have the upside relative to his position that Howard has to his.

Honestly, you---and others---are being way too presumptuous as it pertains to which of these players will have better careers, are better fits for whatever the Panthers are envisioning, or are just overlooking the fact that points and markers for Gettleman's valuation (including upside) may greatly differ from your own. To talk with such authority or in such absolutes is just something that I find literally ludicrous as it pertains to the draft. At the end of the day, I don't think Gettleman is stupid, and won't be "stupid" if he drafts Howard, McCaffrey, Lattimore, Barnett, Thomas, Fournette, Allen, Hooker, Foster Davis, Ross or any of these talented guys with the eighth pick.

The reason I dont like him at #8 is because Cam is not a very accurate passer and I really dont want him throwing 3 yard passes to a 5'10" guy in the slot. I'd prefer to select OJ Howard on offense, because of his size, the problems that 2 TE sets cause for defenses, and the fact that hes a bigger target. That's just me though.

Pick which one, the line sucks or Shula sucks, it can't be both

If the line sucks, then it would make sense the offense sucks no matter who is the OC

Of course it can. They can both have issues. Explain why not.

That's what everyone keeps saying, but Fozzy caught 25 of 33 targets last season. That's 76% of his targets. He's 5'10". Fozzy was by far our most efficient receiver last season.

A top college player in the past didn't make it in the NFL.

Ergo, a player I don't want now won't make it in the NFL either.

That's some solid cipherin' right there!

Not what I said at all. The point is success in college like McCaffrey's had doesn't automatically translate to the NFL. It's not that I don't want McCaffrey. It's that I'm not nearly confident enough in his NFL future to take him top 10. Would be fine with late first, would love at 40 but not at 8.

Didn't you predict Julius Peppers to Carolina like a day before it happened?

I didn't really predict it, I was told it was a done deal before it went public from someone that had personal knowledge of the situation.

Yup.  CmC would get plenty of touches in this offense.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
