I own a 2016 civic, the first year of the new body style. I love the way it physically looked and love the direction Honda has gone with their body styles as I liked the previous one as well.

I drive the EX which is the middle model. Additional features are extra speakers, alloy wheels, larger LCD.

Pros are the style and new engine. Great pick up, first 2.0 4 cyl engine I believe. The drive is very solid, sleek and modern. This is my first Honda as well, I test drove the other Toyota competitors like the Camry/carolla and I just like the Honda better though a bit pricier.

My single complaint so far is the digital side/audio LCD program can be a bit glitchy at times. It's not unbearable or really noticeable , maybe one every couple months. I plan to ask them to reset it next tune up.

I absolutely love the new civic and the design, features and quality parts. Toyota is no doubt a great car as well and is cheaper but I felt the toyotas were plain in style and in handling and enjoyed the civic much more. I've been car shopping for years and tried out many card, never but the bullet until the new civic came out.

I only have like 6k miles on my car so long term I can't say but I have never regretted my decision as of today...it's great choice imo.

No experience with a Civic but...

We had an '05 Accord at one time that I often wish I had never got rid of. We also have had a '07 Odyssey that got totaled last year, but we replaced it with an '05 Odyssey.

I can't say enough how good Honda quality seems to be. I work on our own cars as much as I can and parts are relatively easy to get and not all that expensive, and all their official/original parts seem to be very good in quality.

I'm definitely a Honda advocate.

We've owned the following vehicles at one time or another over the years:
1996 Pontiac Firebird
2000 Plymouth Breeze
2001 Chevrolet Blazer
2002 Chevrolet Cavalier
2003 Infiniti G35
2003 Dodge Stratus SXT
2005 Honda Accord
2005 Honda Odyssey
2007 Honda Odyssey
2007 Chevrolet Avalanche
2008 Ford Fusion
2008 Toyota Camry
2010 Chevrolet Tahoe
2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Out of all of them, Honda, Chevrolet, the Ford, and the Infiniti have been the best, in that order. I'd never buy another Pontiac (I guess they aren't making vehicles anymore anyway,) or Plymouth/Dodge.

We've probably put the most mileage on the Hondas, and had no major issues with any of them. Our accident on our 07 Odyssey was pretty scary, but we replaced it with another Odyssey because of how well it did in the accident and how pleased we were with it before that moment.

I would research the specific problems whatever model you are looking at has encountered on Honda forums and message boards just to see how other people seem to like them. From all I can tell, the Civic is one of the most reliable cars out there. This is primarily because Honda has been making them for years (and is often the trend-setter for the class) and it doesn't change much at the core between years. I watched a video once where a mechanic said as much, when asked what the most reliable/low maintenance vehicles were.

I have a 14 Accord but the lease is up October. I love everything about it besides the absence of AWD. I would get an AWD Honda but they're all ugly as poo. My ex has the 16 Civic and loves it though.

right now i have a 13 elantra. it's reliable and has a nice set of amenities for its price but it doesn't even come close to the fuel efficiency that was touted for the model in the specs. i can barely get 30mpg on cruise on the highway. also the panels are very flimsy. the bumpers feel like you can rip a hole in them with a computer duster. and the resale is laughable. other than that i really don't have any complaints that aren't nitpicks.

before that i had an impala that was the opposite. constant engine/trans problems, but boy could that thing take a hit.

As you can see from my list, we've been through them over the years. Hyundai, from what I hear, is pretty solid under the hood, but not so much on the exterior/aesthetics. Sounds like what you're saying.

As for efficiency, yeah lots of manufacturer's specs are off on those. I think the Civic would be a lot better than the Elantra from what I've read on them on that front. Honda would probably have a higher resell value fwiw, though.

Interesting info on the Impala. I was looking into those for myself years ago. I've heard good and bad on them and, while I have been pretty pleased with Chevy, all indicators are that they can be hit-and-miss alongside Ford on engine/tranny stuff.

On Hondas, most of the stuff I've read about/dealt with are electrical component failures such as actuators in the dual climate control models (replaced one of these myself) and some later life transmission issues. Our particular era of Odyssey has a notorious bad seal in the power steering system that I had to replace once. Also, there's some shaky electrical stuff in the SRS system I am currently dealing with, but again, that is later life stuff.

Most new cars, especially Hondas, are probably good with average maintenance until around 130-150k miles. I don't know many specific warning areas for Civics to watch for, but I am pretty firm in my belief that all major components of Hondas are pretty solid.

i test drove the sport today... tapped the gas and felt the smooth purr of the engine immediately. then i popped a boner and it went through the steering column.

i'm getting it but not today. i have some finances i want to square away before i get the car.

Yeah, it's really built well.  I wasn't even thinking of it until I was at one of those auto mall type areas.

They had one of those light greenish-gray types and the test drive just sold it for me.  Not some floaty Toyota suspension, not over-gozmoed like the Acuras, and all the features you want.  You know what you're getting with the twin turbo honda engine, may need a good cleaup every few years and the specific mobile oil to avoid the clicks, but the thing is MINT in my opinion.

Some people aren't fans of the hatch look but I think it's sexy as hell:

I will be honest about a dislike:  The dash is a little Ford like material and assembly wise but I have had absolutely no problems with the ride.  I've actually gotten a lot of shouts on the road about it.  Gotta go dark gray for the hatch.  Black disguises the accents, light green-gray gets old after a while and the others are too shock colors.
